Can Someone Tell Me Why I Don't Want To Use The Same Tip?

Because if there is any grease left over in your tip or your bag from BC, and you put RI in them, the icing will start to break down. You need to use grease free items when you make and use RI.

You can use the same tip if you wash, dry, etc. before switching from BC to RI.

Or you can use it if you do RI first and BC second.

BUT (and it's a big one), even the smallest amount of grease/fat/oil will cause your RI to go belly up in a bad, bad way, so never use something for RI that has not been impeccably cleaned first! And to be safe, most people never use reusable bags interchangeably. I just use the disposables for RI - it's not worth risking a whole batch!

if there is even a speck of residue left from the bc it will ruin the royal..cause it to melt for lack of a better word...
I had issues a while back because my roses were mooshy and I suspect it was because I was using the same tips that I use for my bc.
I tried changing bags to no avail.

If you use seperate tips for royal it will insure that the icing wont get ruined and wasted on ya
hth

I use the same tips for both Royal and Buttercream. Prior to using Royal I put the tips in a pan of boiling water to remove all traces of grease. I've never had a problem using the same tips for both types of icing.

and a good soaking in degreaser helps too.

I take all my tips and throw them into a cup full of hot water and degreaser while I clean up...washing my tips is my last chore of the day...Never had a problem.

I wash the tips in hot soapy water and then rinse in a mixture of hot water and white vinegar (just a splash of vinegar in about one cup of hot water). The vinegar will discolor the tips a bit but there is no aftertaste because of it, and the vinegar clears away any trace of grease residue.

I always just wash my bags and tips in hot soapy water and have never had a problem going between royal and buttercream frosting. Just my 2 cents worth.

I use my tips for both and just toss them in the dishwasher.

I soak them in hot water and that new Dawn foam dish soap. It works wonders on grease.

I have used them for both. I wash in hot soapy water then soak them in my mixing bowl with 1/2 vinager and 1/2 water. And rinse with hot water and dry. I learned this lesson the hard way. I hope this helps.

I use the same for both and havent had a problem. I do the microwave cleaning method, but i am really not a fanatic about the grease inspection.

As long as you clean everything like it should be cleaned anyway, it shouldn't be a problem. Getting the grease out of some tips is pretty difficult sometimes though

I wash everything (bowls, spatulas, tips, couplers) in hot hot water with vinegar in there also and it gets rid of the grease. The first time I made royal icing I didnt de-grease my tips and flowers were just puddles of icing. For Christmas I asked for a new set of tips though, one for bc and one for ri because im lazy.

It was suggested to me by a fellow CC'er while doing research here for RI snowflakes... they told me that I can use the same tips for both BC and RI BUT I should invest in "Dawn Direct Foam" dish soap. My friend uses this and I've watched it in action! It's great and will be made a part of my weekly shopping list lol. My friend who was away for the weekend came home to find a sink full of dirty dishes, some of which were days old.... darn kids... anyway she came across a pan that the kids made fried chicken on/in and it was covered in nasty greasy mess and she just soaked the pan in soapy water using the Dawn Direct foam and it worked like a charm!!!! icon_biggrin.gif I'd suggest investing in a bottle of this, even if all you use it for is your tips icon_smile.gif
