It will take a LOT of coloring and you will have to correct for texture with more powdered sugar. Is it possible to cover it in white then paint or airbrush it black after? It is a lot of color for the teeth as well... But my best suggestion is to buy it already black if you have the time.

If you are going to paint, I would suggest using Vodka instead of water to thin the color so it will dry faster. No residual taste either.

If you are making MMF, I would suggest using chocolate marshmellows, availaible @ Walmart. Then you will be starting with a dark brown and it won't take much black to be added.

Gel based colorings won't quite dry all the way, but they will work. I would suggest thinning it with alcohol instead of water. Airbrush coloring works with a regular brush as well.

this cake is for my nephew who's turning 8 so for sure there is no trace of the alcohol left over? it just speeds up the drying time and evaporates?
thank you so much for the options especially the chocolate marshmallows tip! i'm remember that for the future!

Yes, it will be fine for the little one. In cake form, I give my kid alcohol all the time lol

(besides, vanilla is alcohol based and no one thinks twice about it)

I agree--buy it, However, if you do make your own, start with chocolate fondant and use dark chocolate cocoa pwdr when you make it, I use the Rhonda's Ultimate Chocolate MMF recipe on this site. It is so easy, so good and you won't need to add much black color to it, but when you do, add it while the marshmallows are still at the soupy stage, before you add PS. The cake in my avator was made with Rhonda's Ultimate Chocolate MMF and got raves on taste and looks.

I second that. SatinIce makes black and you can get it relatively fast.
