Do you have to have a stand mixer to make this, or will a normal hand mixer work? All the instructions I've read say to put it in your stand mixer. Thanks!

Before I got my KA Stand mixer I used a hand mixer. It can be done and it was actually hard for me when I did get my stand mixer to get the right consistency for my frosting. But yes you can use a hand mixer.

You can use a hand mixer but be careful not to beat to much air into the bc. The wire beaters easily beat air into the bc. With a stand mixer we use the paddle attachment as it does not incorporate a lot of air into the bc unless you just way overmix it.

Yes you can use a hand mixer but be careful if you double your batch, I burnt up two mixers until I just gave in and got a KA!

Thanks so much for all the replies!! That makes me happy that I can do it (or at least attempt to)! Hopefully one day I will get a nice KA stand mixer, then I wont have to worry about it!

I NEVER TOUGHT OF HAVING 2 KA. I ALWAYS DID MY BATTER AND THE BUTTERCREAM WITH THE 2 HAND MIXER. MY HUBBY WHEN CRAZY AND GOT ME 2 AND I DIDN`T EVEN ASKED HIM FOR ONE. I USED TO SEE PEOPLE HERE WRITTING ABOUT THOSE MIXERS AND OF COURSE I WANT IT ONE SO BAD BUT NEVER TOLD HIM NOTHING ,BECAUSE WE WASN`T IN THE BEST ECONOMIC SITUATION.HE SAW ME GETTING INTERESTED ON THIS ART AND KNEW ABOUT IT FOR YEARS BUT WASN`T UNTILL A FEW MONTHS BACK I DECIDED TO TRY IT. MY AUNT IS BEEN MAKING CAKES FOREVER ,HER NICKNAME IS MAUCA,SHE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS FORUM. MY HUSBAND BELIVE THAT SOMEDAY I WILL BECOME A PROFESSIONAL.I DONT SEE WHEN! BUT FOR NOW I HAVE TO THANK HIM SOOOOO MUCH FOR THOSE MIXERS.IT WAS SO WEIRD BECAUSE I WAS AT WORK ON A SATURDAY AND I WAS BROWSING THE INTERNET LOOKING FOR THE DIFFERENT KA MIXERS AND DREAMING YOU KNOW,AND THEN MY DAUGHTER CALL ME AT WORK AND SAID ,AFTER WORK COME DIRECTLY TO THE HOUSE BECAUSE DAD GOT YOU A PRESENT I WAS LIKE OK, WHAT IS IT? AND SHE SAID I CAN`T TELL YOU IS A SURPRISE. WELL NEEDLESS TO SAY I WANT IT TO MAKE IT HOME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE . (I WORK AN HOUR AWAY FROM HOME). WELL GOT HOME NOT EXPECTING TO HAVE THAT KIND OF PRESENTS .. THIS MAN IS AWESOME HE GOT ME A WHITE ONE AND THE ARTISAN IN BLACK .(HE DIDN`T EVEN KNOW WHAT ARTISAN stand FOR...lol,.BUT I HAVE TO LOVE THIS MAN. SO YOU DO NOT LOOSE YOUR DREAM OF HAVING ONE. SOMETIMES THE HAVE SPECIALS AND THE MEMBER HERE ARE SO NICE THEY WILL KNOW WHEN IS A GOOD ONE AND THE BEST THING IS THEY SHARE IT WITH EVERYBODY ELSE. LOVE MY CC FRIENDS FOR THAT!!! thumbs_up.gif

Yeah, I've been watching the sales! Sometimes Amazon has really good deals. There is a white Artisan for $170 after rebate right now. I just dont want to spend almost 200 on a mixer!! I just like to play with cakes for a hobby. We'll see though!

I keep telling myself i will buy a KA next time i see one on sale, but every time i do i still can't afford it. LadyDZA, i totally agree! I'm not making any money off my cakes or cookies, so it's hard to throw that much money at a mixer. hopefully the BF will get me one soon! (diamonds? please icon_confused.gif get me a KA!) for now, my dinkt hand mixer does the job! I've used it for BC many many times, and i've always had a nice thick finished product. after i mix, i scapr the bowl sides with a spatula and smush it around a bit so it's not so air-y. works great for me! i even used the poor guy tonight for RBC.... it barely survived. i could hear its little motor saying "STOP!" but he did the job! good boy!

i once had a wedding cake to do- it was a large four tier that took 10 batches of wilton bc (i made) to do this. actualy it only took 8 todo it but i needed the extra for set up on location.

i had a really nice hand mixer- not an expesive one just one made to do hard work.. i got so good at making batches of frosting that i (yes i timed it lol) was able to do a batch of frosting in 2 minutes flat from start to finish that means opening bag of ps and scooping to bowl lol. just went with a rhythm.

when my mixer died i had to learn how to make bc in my KA lol

imagine this.. i still chuckle over it now days. i even bought that special bowl cover with the spout to help "Minimize" the powedered sugar cloud..

that think was a pain in the a$$ i could never get it to gether and when i did it never stayed together and even THen, the powdered sugar always got stuck on the chute due to the static electricity created in this process.... oh yes this was another "fun" side effect of making bc in the KA lol

ah well i dont use the spout attachment anymore and i dont deal with static electricity anymore. it still takes longer to do the batches but its second nature now.

What's really funny is that I have no idea what buttercream is supposed to be like, so it'll be really interesting to see if it "comes out right"! haha, I'd probably be so excited that I made some icing that I'd be jumping around even if it wasnt right. The only kind of icing I've made is Seven Minute Frosting from my Martha Stewart Baking Handbook to go on a homemade coconut cake. It was yummy, but took forever (well, 7 minutes LOL) and reminded me of marshmallows!
