Well, I was asked to do a cake for a baby shower that was held today. Prepared a week in advance with all my materials and slowly put things together this week. Baked my cakes ahead of time so that was one less thing to do on decorating day.

Friday night, I put the kids to bed and commenced with the decorating. Well, I wanted to incorporate baby blocks into my cake so I decided to make 4x4 square blocks covered in fondant. Sounds easy right????

WELL....Like I said, made the cakes the day before....Was getting ready to cut the blocks from my "8x8" square pan because it seemed the most logical and easiest way to make them, only to find out that my "square" cake pan, was 7x7 square!!! WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD MANUFACTURE A CAKE PAN THAT CANNOT BE EASILY BROKEN DOWN BY 2??????

Then we can add in the 7 hours it took me to do the fondant work because nothing matched up!!!

So I did the best I could and they did not come out the way I wanted them too. I was going for the whole wood block effect, but ended up with lopsided, pillow blocks instead.

After being so mad about the blocks for quite a few hours today, the cake kinda grew on me and the Mom to Be absolutely loved it!

So, even though it took me forever, here is my favorite cake I've done so far...

I think it's absolutely adorable!!! It reminds me of the soft blocks all the babies use when they too young to play with anything else. I've never even tried making the blocks so kudos to you! thumbs_up.gif

It did make me feel better that mom loved it.

Does it ever get easier???? I just started decorating cakes about 2 months ago and everytime I work with fondant, it seems like it takes me so long to get things done and so far every fondant cake I've done never turns out the way I want it too. Seems to me that Fondant and I are never going to have a wonderful relationship.

Thanks everybody for checking out my pic. Need some encouragement every once in a while. icon_cry.gif

ok, I have to ask - why is it any harder to divide 7 in half than to divide 8 in half? you just get a 3.5 " instead of a 4" . . . .what am I missing here?

I'm sorry for your frustrations! But your end result is wonderful and even better that the mom loved it!!! That's the best feeling...all worth it!

I understand about you and the fondant not seeing eye to eye icon_lol.gif , fondant and I are the same way! I guess we just haven't found our happy meeting point! Better luck with fondant the next time!

My guess is that she cut the 4" block and then realized she only had 3" of cake left...............We learn as we go along.

I agree with amoos, the blocks remind me of the soft blocks.

Oh, sorry, forgot to add the part about the cake pan being tapered at the bottom in my original post. The cakes came out completely uneven because the corners were rounded and like I said, tapered.

The PIA of the situation for me anyway, was the fact that AC Moore was out of 8x8 pans and so was Joann's so I had to use what was available.
