Hey ladies.....I was just asked to make my first wedding cake. She wants the square style with no tiers. My question is when you stack your cake upon one another 4 cake high ... what do I put between my layers and how does the cake itself not collapse?

You use cake boards and dowel rods. Thye give it the support it needs not to collapse

Dowel, dowel, dowel! Definitely follow the directions from Dougs post or check the back of your wilton book. The only other advise I can give is to make sure it's all level before you start stacking. Will make everything much easier!

Just want to give you a heads-up on the proper terminology so the replies make sense to you:

Layer - 2 or 3 inch cake

Tier - 2 layers, usually with some sort of filling between. Your wedding cake will be 4 tiers.

Pillars - Vertical rods placed between tiers to elevate and leave empty space between tiers. (I believe this is what you're saying the bride does NOT want)

Stacked construction - Tiers placed directly on top of each other with no space inbetween.

Hope this helps!
