Hey gang. I have a cake due tomorrow and for some reason no store in town that sells cake supplies has any boards in stock that'll fit....

I'm making an 11x15" sheet and can not remember what I normally get... I'm looking into buying them online so I don't run into this problem again. I went to one store they didn't have anything but 13x19" well that's way too big... so I ran to Walmart they didn't have anything but rounds so I called my local grocery store bakery where normally I can fall back on if all else fails and some little 16 yr old tells me "we're not allowed to sell or give away our supplies anymore" I had been sitting in a very hot car with no A/C and running back and forth all over town for the last half hour and that was the last thing I wanted to hear so I snapped back "what?! since when!? and what do you mean giving away? it's not like I'm taking it for free I pay you 5 times what you pay for them!" she said "you're welcome to come in and purchase one of our pre-decorated cakes for $18.99 from our front display case" I snapped back "that'd be all fine and good if your cakes didn't taste like shit!" and hung up... I'm just so frustrated!

What size boards do yall use for your 11x15" sheets? That way I know what to look for online when shopping, because I'm only finding ones that are 14x19", 15"x19" and so on... they are all too big I would think...

Considering when you buy for the 9x13" sheet, you purchase a board that is 10x14" as well as a 10x14" box. So why wouldn't they sell 12x16" boards or even 13x17" why jump all the way to 13x19?

Anyway any help is much appreciated! Links are very helpful if you have a favorite box/board place you like to shop. Thanks in advance everyone!!!

Becky

14x19 boards, and 14x19 boxes, that way you can package 3 sizes of cakes

undersized half sheet 11x15
half sheet 12x16
oversized half sheet 12x18

there is no in between boxes between the 10x14 and 14x19, these are standard sizes

You can buy the 13x19 and cut it down with a utility knife.

Personally, I only use foamcore as cake boards now. I love it! I can cut it to any size, cover it with any pattern and the 1/2 inch sides are just perfect for wrapping ribbon around. Plus, they're sturdier than cardboard and lighter in weight than plywood or masonite.

Thank you both! So maybe I always have bought these 13x19" boards?? and just haven't noticed? lol. I dunno....

Any favorite websites you purchase from? It seems that my ONLY craft supply store is slowly kicking cake decorating out and WalMart never has much of anything anyway lol...

Just go to walmart and purchase a foam core board and cut it any size you want I find a utility knife works the best HTH

I buy my foamcore boards at Hobby Lobby. I prefer their brand to Elmer's, which is what Michael's carries. Plus, they're cheaper at Hobby Lobby.

(BTW - I just remembered I was supposed to tell you about cheap projectors at HL... Well, either they've discontinued the cheap models or I'm smokin crack because I couldn't find a projector for less than $55 and none of them was really suitable for cake decorating.)

lmfao thanks Diane and hunny put the pipe down! icon_wink.gif the only pipin' you're supposed to be doin' is on those cakes icon_wink.gif (all in fun hun I promise!)

Thanks for the info! I'll have to look into. I normally don't spend a whole lot on boards because sometimes I won't get them back lmao. If I need to, I'll use a piece of hubby's wood for his projects and carry it on that, only because I know I'll get it back when I drop the cake off but it still needs a board of some sort lol. icon_wink.gif

I'll have to ask him if they have any cheap wood at work I can have and cut to fit each cake lmao

I've not used this, but another woman in town puts all of her sheet cakes on 1/4" thick plywood that she has special cut from Lowe's.

Sam's Club now sells to small businesses. I brought two cases of the boards (50 in each) and a case of the dome lids and bottoms (25 tops and bottoms). The boards fit perfect with the dome containers, plus they are higher in depth than the regular cake boxes thumbs_up.gif .

I love using the foamcore...very sturdy and basically easy to cut to size. I use the foamcore when I do cakes for people that I know...can ask for them back icon_lol.gif

Stephanie,

Do you have to have a tax ID or anything stating you are a small business to purchase these products from Sam's??? I know you don't have to have one to go into Sam's and buy anything else I'm just curious if they question you when you order/request them lol.

I get 1/2 sheet boards and boxes at Sams with no problem. They sell them to anyone just like everything else but you have to buy them by the case of 50. They had a choice of clear plastic dome lids on the black plastic board or a plain white cardboard box with a window in the lid. Super cheap too!

They also sell frosting there, in all colors. (But I make my own.)

Didn't have to have a tax ID. I paid $10.00 for the case of 50 boards and $42.00 for 25 of the dome tops and bottoms. I like the height of the dome top when I do small stacking on a sheet or cupcake cake.

The lady told me to call if I could in advance so that they can order extra. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks you Kim and Stephanie! OMG! $10.00 for 50?!?!?! OMG! that's cheap! I just paid $6.00 for 6 Wilton boards lol. I think I'll be calling Sam's and pre-ordering some come tax time lol. That's when I'll be getting my membership or at the least using dad's membership and heading over for wedding reception foods lol. Thanks so much!!! That's a great deal!

I am gonna have to try these foamcore boards everyone is speaking so highly on... just hopefully I can find them.
One question about using them and not have the decorative foil to cover them. How else could I cover the boards?

You can cover the boards with gift wrap or other decorative paper, then cover with clear, self-adhesive Contact paper. Or, you can just use decorative Contact paper, as I did with the cake in my avatar.

I bought the boards from Sam's also, but I think they are way too flimsy. They just bend right in half. I will have to try the foamcore too. Thanks!!!

I haven't had any problems with the boards that I brought, I use them for cupcake cakes, 9x15 and the 11x15.

For some reason (can't figure it out icon_rolleyes.gif ) the sheet cakes on the foam core feel lighter in weight than they do on the cake boards. I love the foam core for the 12x18 and larger cupcake cakes.
