So I did a wedding cake last night for a dear friend. Pretty simple design, everything went off smooth. (Pink 3 tier in my pics)That was until I got in the car with DH driving. He drives like he's on his way to a fire! Before we left I asked him to please take the corners easy. We were not one block from the house and he gunned it, slamming the cake in to the side of the carrier! ![]()
I know better than to put a cake in the back seat but had no other way to transport this baby. It had to be preassembled due to time constraints. He complained the enitre trip (all of 20 mintues) about how he couldn't drive this way as he wasn't able to get in and out of traffic, he felt like people were having to pass him because he was driving too slow. I told him to chill, were' in town! Would he want his wedding cake smashed? He drove no differently than he does going anywhere else. (Like Mario Andretti) Needless to say, he'll no longer be driving while any of my cakes are on board! I was able to fix the cake, no big deal. But grrr he made me so mad. no consideration for the time I sent on it or for the people it was for. I guess he has the it's free they'll take any way it comes mentality! This one is added to the handful of times my DH acts like a typical man!

Ohhh... that is TERRIBLE... by the time you get there you would be a nervous wreck ! I'll have to compliment my hubby on this one.... he does a GREAT job getting us ( and the cake) there..... I wonder if he senses what would happen if he ruined one ...hummmmm
The first time my DH drove with me holding a cake (my lighthouse cake), I about had a coronary or three, during the 40 minute drive to my parents' house. Sheesh! I think he found every pot hole or sharp curve he could. I had to finally stop hissing in consternation, because every time I did, he jerked again, thinking I saw something on the road that he didn't. ![]()
I wasn't holding this one but I was perched beside it, hugging it tightly! My blood pressure had to be out of sight! I was out of my mind before we got there!

Geez! It's stressful enough when you're doing your own driving!
Luckily, my hubby is in league with grama_j's and jo_ann's. I'm too much of a nervous wreck to drive myself. Plus, I can hardly lift the cakes we deliver. If I didn't have my right hand man, I'd have to hang up my apron.
Sometimes we tape a sign to the vehicle that says, "Wedding cake in transport" so people don't have a stroke when we take turns at a snail's pace. Tinted windows prevent other drivers from trying to peek in when they should be paying attention to their driving. ![]()
Diane! Thank you so much for the RI tips! My little cage, crown thingy was perfect! It looked great atop that HOT PINK cake. I would have lost my mind w/o you!!!!! TY,TY,TY,TY

My husband drove me (and the cakes) crazy until he lost one. He's VERY careful now. Luckily, that one was just a sheet cake and the only thing messed up was the bottom border, but it basically flipped on it's side because it was "just fine on the backseat". LOL
You guys are lucky that you have a husband that will help you deliver cakes. I wish mine would. He doesn't support me at all with my cake decorating. No moral support, no delivery support and no comments on how my cakes look. I am making a 4 tiered bridal cake, 12 in square bridal cake, 3 dozen decorated cupcakes, 5 dozen decorated cookies all for his sister who is getting married. I have been baking my a__ off all day long today. I have to make a zillion roses for everything. Last night I asked him if he would help me transport the 4 tier cake next Saturday to his SISTER'S shower. He had a pissy fit. It's for his sister for crying out loud. I got him to tell me he would drive me but that will be about it. I guess I should be thankful for that. So count yourselves lucky that you have a husband that will help you out and support you in your cake decorating.
First of all, love the colors of the cake, they look great together. Now, about the driving situation, with me its the opposite; when my husband is driving with a cake on board I have to tell him to speed up a little bit. He is so afraid to mess up the cake that he drives very slow and it drives me crazy. He says that he would feel bad if anything happens because of him after I put so many hours on the cake.
Me again, I forgot to say that I guess I am really lucky. Due to a car accident I have back problems and sometimes it hurts a lot when I have to roll the fondant so, many times my husband would do it for me. Also, he built like this platform that we put in the back of our SUV and that way we could transport the cakes and they are very stable and I dont have to sit next to them or carry them.
What if next time you drove and he sat in the passenger seat? He might complain the whole way about how slow you are but at least you're cakes will arrived just as perfect as they left!
That's what I was thinking! He may complain the whole way there about your driving, but at least you know your cakes will arrive in one piece.
I wish I could sell more cakes because that is the only time my DH drives anywhere near reasonably!
