Where are Toba's classes offered? Are they through one of the cooking schools in NY? I live in NJ and would love to look into them. Thanks!

Can you help me find the info? When I go to her website, it only talks about private classes . . . it doesn't list any classes that she's holding, it only says,

"Chef Toba Garrett is available (with a 3 to 6 months advanced notice) to privately teach individuals or groups for 1 day to 10 days. The class is generally 3 to 3 1/2 hour day. However, the classes can be up to 5 hours long. The chef is available to travel almost anywhere. Specific costs regarding accommodations, travel, meals and classes need to be individually accessed. "

I don't even know how to make that a link above, sorry dunce.gif It seems she does workshops out of the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC where she teaches! Some prices even seemed reasonable.

Thanks! I told my hubby tonight that I'm going off to N.Y. at some point next year to take a cake class . . . he nodded and said, "that sounds good". I bet he wasn't even listening. Wait until I book the tickets and stick him with the kids!

Toba teaches at Ices, the culinary school on 23rd st. in new york city. The classes only have 9 to 10 people in it. You had to take class 1 to get to 2 and so on. No one in the class knew how to do the lacing work and at the end of the week were pros.
I think when you see it done in front of you and you have all the equipment anything is possible.

http://www.iceculinary.com/recreational/cake_decorating.shtml
this is the site to where she teaches. I could do a private, but then I wouldn't get to meet others in my field and meet new friends.
If anyone wants to come to NY and take a class, I have extra guest rooms in my home and I'll house you for nothing! If you have any chance to take a class wether it be wilton or Kerry Vincent, do it!

I emailed the creator of this cake, Wendy Kromer, and she is wonderfully helpful. She email me back within half an hour and then emailed me again the next morning. I had emailed her commenting on this cake, her Lambeth Style cake! I told her that I had just recieved a 1934 edition of Joseph Lambeth's Cake Decorating and Creative Pastries book!

She is very sweet and has unbelievable talent. No wonder Martha has her make cakes for her Wedding magazine!

Okay, I was just at her website -- did anyone notice those prices????? I charge $35 for an 8 inch buttercream cake and get nothing but grief!! How can she justify it -- or are they just paying for the name?

no, not only the name...but for her talent, expertise and education and experience.

When I used to teach, I would get very enthusiastic students after the first few classes ask me what was my price list, as they wanted to sell cakes too...

It always amazed me how many people would want to fly before they could even walk!

I would tell them what my prices where and also add on...and that's with 20 years experience!

( I lived in a very small town in PA...and in 1996 I charged 1.25 for wedding servings! and people would freak out, this was at a time that it was NOT unusual to pay .75 cents pp! But I stuck to my guns and would only take 2 weddings on Saturday and one on Sunday)

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being enterprising, but one must be realistic.

She has a name, experience and all that jazz...plus she charges what HER market can bear!!!!

That book is unbelievable! I love the fact that there are 55 gorgeous versions of borders for cakes, top and bottom! I've already practiced and used two versions on my last two cakes. I'm practicing for my cake show entry in a cake show in March. My entire cake is going to be Lambeth!!!

Look at her techniques!!!!!!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif That is why she can charge what she charges and people will pay that! Toba is who I identify with most in style! Of course I kind of discovered my style before I even knew who Toba Garrett was but when I discovered her books one day icon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif I thought to myself "I'm definately on the right track with my style of decorating." I'm no Toba for sure but the people that know me and have been given me as a recommendation know that they will get the best in taste and design!!! Just look at the comment that the gentleman I made that red/white roses cake for left on the picture on my www!!!!! If you look, just click on comments and you'll see the cake. It's compliments like THAT that let you know you are on the right track and are doing a great job and shouldn't doubt your abilities at all!!!!!!!

I made a mistake on the price of my class earlier.
It was $525.00 not 725.00. The higher was another class with someone else. Don't want to mislead anyone.

Just received my book (Toba's new one). I am thrilled as this is like baking/decorating classes in a book, starting from basic lines right up to decorating cookies! Wow, now this is worth the money. Thank you to whoever recommened cooking.com to get this book. Now, if I am a good girl and do every lesson, maybe someday I will be a fraction as good a decorator as Toba! icon_lol.gif

i just got mine last week. I haven't had time to go through it all but the glimpse that i caught was awesome. i did see some of the same stuff that was in her Well Decorated Cake book but it doesn't seem like too much overlap and this book goes into much more detail. Definitely a good deal . . . i can't believe it's being sold for $39!!!

Okay, ya'll! Just wanted to know how many of you all got the book for Christmas!!!!!

I have already finished the book! I got a few hours to myself on Christmas Eve day while my DH wrapped all my gifts so I went to Starbucks with my book and no kids in tow either and finished reading the book. There is a lot of repeat information in it from her The Well-Decorated Cake book but some new information and tips as well!!!! I can't wait to try her techniques!!!!

My DH leaves in 3 weeks for his 7 month deployment and then I will be able to start on my cake show entry in which I will be doing the Lambeth method. I have Lambeth's book and now having Toba's two books I should be able to create the masterpiece I have always wanted to create.

I went to Home Depot yesterday and picked out some paint samples for the colors I am going to do. Now I'm as anxious as ever to get started!!!!!!!

I got this book right after Thanksgiving day. Then that Sunday my husband was admitted into the hospital. I took the book with me but could only read the first four chapters. Though I have looked thru it numerous times also. But reading it has been hard. Not that it is hard - far from it - but time to read has been. Waiting for my surgery for carpel tunel to come and make me sit down and relax and read then. This Friday is the day. So am antisipating the time to read. I have the other cake book of hers but wish I could have gotten her cookie book also. Oh well Ebay may have it if Amizon doesn't. Yes her book is repetative from the other but in a good way. Love the pictures in it also.

I'm sorry to hear that your husband was in the hospital and your carpal tunnel. My MIL had surgery on both her hands! It was difficult for her for a while but she's okay now!!!!

I have all three of her books. The cookie book is amazing! I highly recommend it. To me it takes a lot more time and attention to detail to do cookies. I love doing them but I just can't find the time to do all the detail required to create masterpieces like she does. Doing a cake is so much easier and less stressful for me! Plus it produces bigger results!!

I'd love to take a class from this woman! I admire her work so much. She is the one decorator out there that I most recognize with in style and technique!!!!!!!!

Enjoy her book!
