Stringwork Question?

Anybody have any tips on preparing royal icing to do stringwork? I have never done it except in practice (just not good enough for a real cake), but it never seems to be the right texture to "string." Either it's too loose or too stiff, and breaks off before I can stick it down. Anyone have tips on preparing it so it will string nicely, and what size tip do you use? Thanks!
