other than fondant, what can I use to cover cake boards?
I want it to be white and of course, grease proof. I've heard of contact paper...what is that and where can I get some?
Thanks!
you can cover it with wrapping paper (maybe fabric?)and then contact paper. i have seen contact paper at walmart in their kitchen aisle near things like dish drainers, tupperware etc. basically contact paper is a thick clear plastic that is sticky on one side. i used to use it to cover my school books so they wouldnt wear out so quickly. i have also heard people use the press and seal plastic wrap over the paper. the plastic or contact paper makes it nice if you want to reuse your cake board if you get it back, just remove the layers and you can re use it another time. i usually just use the foil cake drum wrapped with ribbon on the sides or cover with fondant.
Reynold's Freezer paper is the best thing for covering cake boards. It is made for wrapping meats and other foods to store in the freezer. It is white and has a wax coating so that no grease can get through. Also, it is made for wrapping food so you don't have to worry about it being safe.
I use the freezer paper for wrapping the boards, however there is several other items. They do have waxed cake boards, which can be ordered from a commercial supplier, also there is glassine liners which can be used, they also can be ordered, they are like doiles but coated to help with the grease problem. You may be able to find these online somewhere. I use my bakery supplier. If you cannot buy from a commercial outfit, you might try a bakery near you that would order them for you.
