I was just wondering how you guys got your first paid wedding cake, how did you get it? Did you tell the people that you had not done a wedding cake before? I would like to do one but am not sure if I am ready or how to go about getting one. Any suggestions?

Whenever I get into the "I do cakes" conversation with people, I make sure I mention " Oh yeah, I do wedding cakes too!" Now it took about 8 months of doing birthday cakes, baby shower cakes etc., before I was asked to do a wedding. It was through word-of-mouth....I had done a b-day cake for this person's co-worker. It's also on my card,....and no, I didn't tell the bride and groom that this was my first wedding. I've done wedding cakes before, for my portfolio and then my husband and I eat them!!

I was thinking of making one for Christmas for the family gathering. Make a wedding cake style tier and just add poinsettas and ribbon to get the practice then I could put it in my portfolio.
