have you ever bought a fellow rival cake decorators cake to see what it tasted, looked like and try to get yours to taste just as good or better? or have you ever just bought a cake decorators cake just to taste it, if so which one and if anything came of it?

Thanks!

I haven't done that. But whenever I go somewhere cake is served, I try to figure out what kind/flavor, etc.

No, I've never done that. Curiosity is too expensive. I have thought about buying a custom cookie though to see what the taste, texture and icing is like.

I know 2 cake decorators in our area and we have ended up being friends. We refer back and forth. We sample each other's cake and cookies. One has had her shop for awhile and the other has just opened her shoppe. I am proud that they are my friends.

Now for the ones that I know OF...when we have a wedding fanfare, I will sample their cakes and decide which one I like better. I don't ever try to change my recipes to taste like someone else's...that's why my clients come to me.

Not for cakes. I'm a terrible cake snob .... I only like mine! icon_twisted.gif

But ... I have bought a Cookies by Design Cookie Bouquet to check out their technique and taste.

Like indydebi - I have become a self-proclaimed cake snob. Yes, I admit it.

I have not bought a cake just to see what someone else's tastes like (I am not licensed so I can't call anyone my "competition"). But I am ALWAYS checking out the cake at whatever events I'm at and curious to find out what they taste like, what fillings, etc. I do sort of chuckle when I have been at some pretty elegant/upscale events and the cake tastes like sawdust, as I think to myself "I could have done better than this!". icon_smile.gif

Or you're at a very formal reception and you're trying to figure out how you're going to spit that nasty cake out of your mouth before you realize you are stuck with having to actually swallow it! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
