I brush some corn syrup on the board, then cover it with fondant.
Thanks everyone it looks like there are several options I can do. I may end up covering it w/ contact paper because I am using several pieces together so that it will be thick enough and the contact paper would hold my foamboard together also.

I am very curious about this covering a board with fondant. What about when you cut the cake, do you also cut into the fondant? How does that work out? I would like to try it sometime, but this came to my mind and wonder if it poses a problem with the cutting at all.
beemarie,
Actually the foamboard I will be covering will be for the handle of the guitar so nobody will be eating this part. I am planning to put some bamboo stickes inside the foamboard to "stick" into the cake and put some supports under the handle to hold it up level w/ the heighth of the cake

I brush the board with piping gel. I prepare the board several days in advance so that the fondant has time to harden and I also place the cake on a single board cut to the size of the cake before it goes on the fondant covered board.

Me too, GRAMMASUE! I love the look of a fondant covered borad. It just makes everything look so clean.
