I have been PM'd a few times about how I made my Thomas the train cake. And I thought visual aid would help....I figured I might as well post this where everyone can see...maybe it will help someone else too.

I must say though I got my initial instructions from KHalstead and kjb's unfinished Thomas picture too. I hope you two don't mind that I post these instructions !!!

Things you'll need:

I used this recipe : http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-1972-0-Durable-Cake-for-3D-and-Wedding-Cakes.html

1 cake made in a 9X13 pan
1 package of fudge striped cookies
Crusting buttercream Icing in grey, blue, black, red, and yellow.
sharp serrated knife
Small amount of MMF

You can make Thomas's face a few days in advance....also, if you want wheels you can make those in advance too.

(thanks to KHalstead for these directions on making Thomas's face)

Mold a face right onto one of the cookies, out of fondant , I used marshmallow fondant recipe from CC. I rolled two crescent moon shapes for the eyebrows, put them on the cookie, then molded the nose and attatched it to the cookie, then the shape of his upper lip and chin and then I rolled a larger piece of fondant to about 1/4 inch thick or so and laid it over the entire cookie helping to push it down so that it showed the structure of Thomas' face (the eyebrows etc. that are underneath). Then I added some white balls on top (secured with a little water on fingertip) for his eyes, and teeth, and some small black balls for the pupils, and some small black crescents for the eyebrows. (I painted them on with black foodcoloring or you could even use the food pens)

Then here are my pictures to describe how to build Thomas....... They are backwards whoops!! Start at the bottom!!

Wow, thanks for taking the time to do this. I would love to try it for my son's 3rd birthday in Feb. I hope you don't mind if I pm you if I have further questions.
