I am preparing to make a 3 tiered cake for my cousin's baptism in a month (huge family party afterwards). I would like to try using satin ice to cover the cakes. To date I have only ever used Wilton Fondant ( I know - I can hear the groans already, but around here that is the only thing available). I am making the following size cakes (all 2inch single layers with 2 layers per cake with either bc or pastry filling in between) - 6", 8", and 10".
How much should I order to make sure I have enough and don't run out while covering (since I won't be able to run down the street to pick some more up)?

Also where is the best place to order it from and how long does it normally take to ship??????

Thanks a million for all responses. icon_biggrin.gif

I would get at least 10 lbs of it. You probably will only need 6 to 7 lbs but get the extra to be on the safe side. It keeps a long time.

I buy mine directly from the company but you need to get it by the case there. I heard intheoven has good prices and globalsugarart also carries it.

I have heard that www.intotheoven.com has good prices, but I have always purchased mine from www.cakesbysam.com she also has a chart on there to figure out how much fondant you need for your cakes, it is free and I just downloaded it and have a copy somewhere.

I can't say enough good things about cakes by sam. I always get my orders shipped quicker than they say and great customer service.

I've made a 6-8-10 3-tiered cake, and used more than 6 pounds of fondant to cover them. I got the 20 lb bucket for a great price and good shipping from www.bakedeco.com . Satin Ice has a shelf life of a year, so don't worry about buying such a big bucket.

maybe im the only one, but i only need a 5 lb bucket of satin ice to cover a 6,8,10. I usually have some left over too.
