I have not had great results colouring IMBC. I find using regular gel paste colours does not work well, the colour will not emulsify with the buttercream and ends up either pooling in the bottom of the mixing bowl, or worse separate on the cake! I have had better results using Wilton Candy colours. My problem is that I have some cupcakes due later in the week, and the colours requested are colours that I do not have in my candy colour set. I live overseas so I will not have time to order these colours either.

Does anyone have any tips on how to make my regular gel paste colours work for IMBC? Can you colour the sugar syrup in the early stages of making the buttercream?

Alternatively if anyone has another buttercream receipe which tastes good and is not too sweet, I am all ears. icon_lol.gif

I probably would add to syrup. We have oil base color readily available here so it is hard to say???

Thank you moydear77. I may just have to try that, or I am afraid it is going to be white cupcakes with glitter or sprinkles in the appropriate colours.

Anyone else have any bright ideas?

You can use powder color also to the butter.

I never have to much luck coloring my smbc, I can only make pastels at best!

So I let people know, to chose good tasting pale smbc or brightly colored nasty american buttercream.lol

actually I have iced my cake wi th the smbc and popped in the freezer so I can swish a thin layer of American BC on top to eighter airbrush or use the ABC for the decor and flowers....HTH

RisqueBusiness, I like your double icing method. Good idea for a big cake, but probably too fiddly for little cupcakes.

Had it not been for the fact that these cupcakes are for a party which my little boy is also attending, and I do not want to have to deal with him on an American BC sugar high, I would just go for ABC. I guess coloured sprinkles on plain IMBC it is then.

Or I guess I could try to stripe the icing bag with regular paste colour, it is not like I am then trying to emulsify the colour into the cream, it is just sitting on top?
