I am throwing a pickles & ice cream baby shower and need help with a cake. I want to do a a 3D/sculpted pickle for the cake. Does anyone have any advice on how to sculpt a cake and how to decorate a pickle?

Thanks in advance!

you could stack two half sheets together (13x1icon_cool.gif and carve it into a pickle shape. frost it with green frosting (not to neatly, leave some ridges for texture) then pipe some bumps on it and write on the board your salutation. If I was makin this I would go for broke and even dye my cake green. Then it would look like giant pickle slices with a scoop of icecream on the plates. LOL (I can just see it now) "GIANT PICKLE SERVED AT BABYSHOWER! the rest of the story on the ten o'clock news. LOL I love this idea!!!!

Ah... Thank you! I LOVE the idea of dying the cake green! How fantastic. Do you have any tips for sculpting the cake? I have not actually sculpted one before. I heard its good to freeze them first, what do you think? If so, do you know how long I should freeze it for?

Thank you so much!

Could you do a jelly roll cake to look like the pickle and place it on top of another cake?
Here is one make to look like an ear of corn -- just to give you an idea of what I am talking about. http://thepartyworks.com/article_info.php/cArticlePath/96/articles_id/1103

You should freeze it for a while, i usually bake one day, and freeze, then sculpt and decorate the next...but i think it needs a few hours! Then use a serrated knife (bread knife) to cut the cake into the shape you want..

just start off cutting off small portions at a time until you get the look you want! dont get too overzealous because you cant put the cake back!

sounds like a great idea chaptlps serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream would be delicious, and a great theme!

Carving isn't hard hun, just get rid of the stuff that don't belong on a pickle lol. I would partially freeze the cake so that it is a little firm but still soft enough to cut without cussin. I think an hour in the freezer should suffice. I would start out first by carving a pickle shape, then round the edges top and bottom till it looks nice n rounded . Then I would freeze it so that it firms up nicely.
Just remember while you are carving, take your time and go a little at a time. You can always cut away more but if you cut too much then you'll have to use way more frosting to cover up the hole. But then again pickles are bumpy anyway. LOL.
