HI! Welcome to Cake Central! Here is a recipe for the crusting buttercream that I use.

2 lbs. powdered sugar
1 c. shortening( Crisco)
1 c. butter
1/3 c. water
1/4 tsp. salt
2 t. vanilla

Mix half of the sugar, water and a little of the Crisco, salt & vanilla about 5 min. on low speed. Add the rest of the Crisco and sugar and mix another 5 minutes. Scrape bowl and mix another 3 minutes or so until smooth.
Make sure to keep this icing covered because it will crust over quickly.

Welcome to CC.
There are some great buttercream icing recipes in the recipe section. I still use the Wilton recipe. I don't use fondant, but from what i read on here; yes buttercream helps fondant to stick.
Good Luck. Someone with more knowledge will come along with a great answer. I'm sure. Blessings.
