I made my first stacked cake today. Putting the top cake on the bottom cake was tricky. My fingers slipped and messed up the frosting on the top one and I didn't get the top when centered so I had to slide it over and the frosting was all messed up on the bottom cake. Help! How do you put the top cake on the bottom cake?

well.... with fondant i didn't have a problem but BC was another story!!

I found on here someone suggested leaving your dowels up a little like an inch or two, then you can get your fingers under the top teir without getting then in both cakes. Set it on the dowels and let the wieght of the cake push them down.

thjat way you can get a better idea of your center!

I kind of thought of that after the fact. Makes sense, thank you!

I'm so glad you asked that. I've been wondering that for quite awhile. Great idea about the dowels. Thanks to both of you!

I've made a few stacked wedding cakes.

1st I never stack when the icing is fresh(wet), usually decorate the cake the evening before and stack the next day.

2nd I take an extra cake circle and mark where the cake will sit with a toothpick. If I am using cake plates, I will make the indention with the bottom of the plate as my template.

I always have extra icing and tend to put a border around the bottom where the two cakes meet and I add this border last. Sometimes, right before the party. You can even wait to add your bottom layer border along the top until after you stack.

Remember icing is forgiving, take a warmed spatula (place in a warm glass of water and wipe dry before using), and fix those messed up areas.

Happy Baking!
