the preval can be purchased at home depot, and other hardware stores for around 5 bucks.

Thanks melysa. I was asking my hubby about using a sprayer like that and he said it won't work. I'll have to get this and show him it does. icon_biggrin.gif

oh, it does. i've used them before. the trick is to get the right consistency as not to clog or cause spatters, or be too thin where it drips. but, yes it works.

there are some people that will adamantly argue against its use on a cake that will be eaten. if you call the company, they will say (probably just to cover themselves) it is not for food use.

however, there are also people who can attest that the same additives that are in a can of compressed air for an airbrush is what is in the preval...or have you ever read the back of a can of wilton color spray? yup, same stuff.

in my humble opinion, its fine. i eat worse things when *I* eat a twinkie. (well, ok- i dont eat twinkies, haha)

For those of you who have an airbrush, I just last week bought a bottle of Pearl Luster Dust (liquid) for airbrushes; made by Bakery Crafts. I plan to try it out this week, and hope it works better than mixing my own (which clogs up the airbrush).
I found it at a cake shop in Memphis, Tn, and it is brand new, so anyone interested, you might want to check it out...

Just an FYI on the Preval Sprayer....this is what Duff (Ace of Cakes) uses on his cakes. Most of his are covered in color.

PME makes a product also that I know Emmacakes uses on her stuff. The only place Ive found that sells it in the US is Globalsugarart.com but he's been out of stock for a while now. I really want to try it out since I know Emma's cakes always come out really nice using it.
So I guess I will stick with my airbrush for now!

he does use this, but i believe just on his dummy cakes. i think there was a thread one time about this and someone emailed (or pm'd - i think she is registered here on cc) mary alice, and the response was that- but again, in my opinion, that is the "proper" answer for anyone using a product like this not "intended" for food use, simply for liability assurances.

the majority of the times you see him on his show, he's using a real airbrush for cake

with that said though, i still dont have a problem with it.

I purchased that last night icon_biggrin.gif but haven't used it yet. It's got to be easier then mixing with vodka. Let me know how it works when you use it thumbs_up.gif

Melysa- I don't eat Twinkies either, but I do like Ding Dong's every now and then. They're so nasty, they're good. icon_biggrin.gif

I bought mine at a cake decorating supply store. It was $12.99 for the 100ml spray can. It's made by PME. I don't know if anyone else besides Global Sugar Art carries it online right now. It comes in Red, Green, pearl, gold, bronze, and blue. I haven't used it yet. I'm waiting for the right cake!!!

I bought the same brand of aerosol luster dust as CoutureCakeCreations but I bought it straight from the manufacturer via the phone. Here's a link with their number. http://sdbytracy.com/sprays.htm

Here's another source of the aerosol luster dust http://www.sweetnfancy.com/cake.html. I'm not sure what brand and how this works but you can purchase it from them. It's under the edible spray colors... just scroll down.

Melysa I also use the preval sprayer and it works perfectly, mostly on fondant and gp work but....I think will get the lustre spray for the cake itself, I love the sheen!

Just to let ya know...I put in a order for 3 cans at 19.50 plus the 10.00 shipping for the spray...so really the 10.00 for the shipping isn't really all that bad.

jessie, the only cake I've used it on is a graduation cake. Here's the link to the cake http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=624913. I basically sprayed it on BC and the gumpaste grad cap. HTH.

Melysa, I think I paid something like $27 for the three luster sprays and shipping. There is no minimum order required. HTH.

melysa, your cake looks great! I'm thinking I'm going to have to check out the local Home Depot for the Preval spray gun tomorrow!

BYW, this is off-topic, I know, but I have to ask. On your dummy cake, do you cover the styrofoam with plastic or anything before you cover it with icing or fondant? I have one that I covered with plastic wrap, but it gets all bunched up and I wasn't sure if that would be hard to cover nicely. Haven't tried it yet. Thanks!

Just to clear things out, I bought directly from the manufacturer (Artistic Precision). It's not a whole lot cheaper and I had to call twice to remind them that I need the items. The lady who takes phone in orders was very nice though. icon_smile.gif

There's a cake I'm doing for this weekend and would love to spray it with a pearl luster, however there is not enough time to order the spray cans. Can anyone help me with the proportion amounts if I use the preval sprayer?

I am so glad to know that you can order this direct from the company. I have tried for a month to order it from CK Products , but they say that they are out and do not know when they will have more. GlobalSugarArt has also been out for a while, as someone said above.

I did order the dust airbrush liquid from BakeryCrafts last week and have not tried it yet, but it seems to be a great value for the size bottle you get!

jsoedwards, thank you. no, i dont cover the dummies in anything. just spritz with water and cover. then peel off the fondant, soak in hot soapy water, dry and re use.

fooby, oops. thanks for the clarification. i must have been too tired to pay attention clearly.

sugarmomma, i never really pay attention to my proportions, i just mix until i "feel" like its right. you dont want it thick like paste or honey, but it shouldnt pour as easy as water either. you are going for a paint consistency. i THINK its about 3 to 1 , vodka to dust...(?) having a hard time remembering, its been awhile since i've used the preval. basically, you'll know its too thick if its "spits" and splatters. (test on a paper towel first.) and its too thin if it drips and doesnt look colored. if you pass over it too many times too quickly, it will also drip. allow it time to dry up in between coats. spray in a WELL ventilated area (outside is perfect or your kitchen will have glitter/dust EVERYWHERE!)
