WORKING WITH MANY HISPANICS, I'D LIKE TO CREATE A CAKE THEY WOULD ENJOY. MANY WEAR THE CHAINS AND SHIRTS WITH THE (FORGIVE THE SPELLING) GUATEALOUPE (VIRGIN MARY) ON THEM. I'D LIKE TO FIND A FBCT OF THIS OR OTHER HISPANIC ORIENT. ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS. I LOOKED IN THE GALLERIES BUT IT WAS VERY LIMITED. THANKS
While I totally appreciate the idea of a cake with the Virgen de Guadalupe on it, not everyone might. I would imagine there might be some who would not appreciate slicing into her. Much as other Christians might not want to slice into a picture of Jesus. I would think a rosary, or a cross would be nice. And in reference to the Blessed Mother- lots of roses and Lily flowers (she has often used flowers in her appearances to visionaries). You might also make something that is removable- a transfer, a small statue (either made of gum paste or using a figurine), that way they could remove her before slicing. If you do decide to use an image of her, she is traditionally wearing some form of the color blue- I forget why exactly. The Guadalupe image tends to be very ornate and colorful. I can probably find something for you to use if you'd like- email me and let me know. You can usually find small statues or medals with all her various names/images at Catholic book stores (many towns have stand alone stores, or they are often connected to a Catholic church). Check the phone book to find one. I would think a small statue of her in the midst of flowers and perhaps a rosary going around the outside would be lovely and appreciated. I hope I haven't offended- I just wouldn't want some dear elderly woman fainting dead away as a knife sliced through La Virgen!
Great idea, but I gotta go with Kathy172 on this one - as beautiful an idea as it is, it is also possible that might offend some and come across as blasphemy. Also you want to watch out for things that may look beautiful but are actually not so appealing when you think about it. For instance, the Taj Mahal is stunning, but it is a mausoleum, you wouldn't feel so good about eating it, LOL... so things to consider maybe.
We are not Catholic, but in our religion it is just not so nice to cut into sacred images but here is my suggestion: you COULD perhaps add her by doing a plaque or figurine in gumpaste or some other medium and using her as a topper. That is what I do with Ganapati and other religious images - that way they need not be cut into and can even be kept as a memento if the recipient wishes. Giving Ganapatis with religious or ceremonial cakes is my trademark.
This could be yours!
One last thing, I am not sure if there are any dietary restrictions, but if there are (I don't know, maybe no meat on certain days or something) then I try to make sure to also follow that as well. When doing a cake for Buddhist or Hindu religious festival and decorating with religious images I make sure no eggs are in the cake; Jewish or Muslim ceremony should be kosher if you are using religious symbols, etc. so on and so forth otherwise I feel that I am not doing a good thing. Religion and politics - very dangerous territory, LOL... ![]()
If you want to capture the Hispanic market in your area, why don't you investigate the local flavors of your area and make a nice cake accordingly...
Tres Leches,
Passion Fruit ( parcha )
and things like that.
Religious images are a little iffy and I wouldn't really offer them unless it was asked for.
