Why do I have this problem. I hate when this happens. I have a cake due this Saterday. It's for a husband and wife for their 90th birthday celebration.
They want to full sheet cakes. I know how I'm going to do the ladies cake but I am at a total loss for the gents cake. His daughter-in-law is a friend of mine and she had no idea how she wants the cake decorated. She told me to do what I want...... ![]()
To me guy cakes are hard!! I'm good at the "girly" thing!!
Can someone please give me some ideas. I've been looking and looking but I have not come across anything that say "That's it"!!
Putting out my "feelers" to you guys!!!
TIA!!!!
For some reason I have a "his & hers" theme in mind. . . . . . like towels, or coffee cups or I don't know. . . . . you could almost do anything. . . decorate his cake like a masculine towel . . . maybe flannel? And hers with flowers or something . . . or just a "his and hers" cake again with the masculine colors/flannel, and hers with flowers. I'm kind of thinking out loud . . . I hope I helped in some way! ![]()
I'd look in the over the hill gallery here.
There are some Maxine's that might work, since they left it up to you, may just do something funny. If it was my grandpa, I'd put something in there calling him an old fart, but since you don't know him that well, I guess you probably don't want to do that!

What about sports? You're in Pennsylvania...he could be a Philly's fan, Eagles fan, Steelers fan...etc...also hockey.
I like the hunting/fishing thing from up above too. Good luck!
What about something similar to a classic groom's cake? Maybe just a chocolate cake with chocolate icing and chocolate strawberries around the sides with 'happy birthday X" written on it? It sounds plain, but I'm sure everyone would enjoy it and it'd be better than racking your brain for something...
Or what about a Model T car with something along the lines of "still a classic" or something on it? If he's 90, that mean he was born in 1917 (whoa!) what about something important or historical from that year?
i had this problem just this week with 2 guys i was supposed to make office bday cakes for. they had extremely dissimilar likes (one was into hunting and doesnt like cake in general, the other is a father of 5 and golfs when he supposedly has spare time) so i just said ok cheesecake it is! for some reason cheesecakes are masculine to me...and you can decorate them without going girly. I made a snickers cheesecake that i poured ganache over and made swirly rosette things with whipped icing around the top, drizzle some caramel add chopped nuts and it looks fab and you're done! i didnt even write happy birthday on it lol, cheesecakes speak for themselves ![]()
First I want to thank all of you for taking the time to help me. Everytime I come here I always get help without fail!! THANK YOU!!!
What I have deceided to do is a fall theme cake for him.
He use to work at Hersheys Chocolate Factory....I didn't want to do that...I was afraid that it would end up looking more like a retirement cake. He never really hunted or fished...I already thought of that one..LOL!!
So it's a fall theme cake! I'm going to try to make come acorns out of gumpaste and I'll do some mums in fall colors...I also have some leaf cutters that are oak, elm, etc...I'll do some of them.
When I'm all done I'll post the pictures! Thanks again everyone!!! Sometimes I have a really hard time thinking of ideas and others I'm brimming with them!! ![]()
