I have a bride who wants her cake to sparkle so she asked me could I put crystals on the cakes like how I would normally put pearls or dots. She wants them positioned so that the cake will sparkle whichever way you look at it. Oh and she wants buttercream icing. The setup of the cake is 14,12 7" columns then 8" cake 5"columns and then a 6" cake. All ivory buttercream icing with a burgandy ribbon for a border and burgandy roses and crystals spaced out on each tier. Can I make this look beautiful? I can use any suggestions you have.
TIA
Faye

I used Swaroski Crystals for a necklace cake. Though my cake was covered with fondant. The crystal surely add a spark!

If you're going to use real ribbon (which I don't) you could glue the crystals to the ribbon. But if you're talking about putting non-food crystals on the cake then, no, I wouldn't do that for any reason. I'd refuse even if it meant losing the order.

All it would take is for one kid to swallow one and the parents would sue you all the way to "Heck" and back.

I would TOTALLY agree with this!!!

You can use edible glitter all over the cake which gives a HUGE sparkle without the potential of someone losing a tooth or you being sued by a parent.

I agree so I guess I will call her and let her know. Do you have any ideas other ways I can make her cake sparkle? Thanks for all of your help.

So I called the bride and told her about the crystals and she was fine with it but she still wants her cake to shine/sparkle. Has anyone made a wedding calke with the sparkling sugar or other things to make the cake sparkle? If so I would love to see pictures.
TIA

Hi. Here's a thread where Zookeeper posted her first wedding cake and it is beautiful and SPARKLY!!! Maybe she could help you. It looks like sanding sugar. Also, I have seen where people have discussed buying edible jewels online but I do not have the info. Sorry!
Please post pictures! I would love to see what you come up with. It sounds very pretty!

You could use Glitter Piping Gel too, that would really add sparkle. It's fairly new out there from what I can tell. I saw a cake here on CC that used it and it was gorgeous! I just wish I could remember who did it!

Just FYI sanding sugar is NOT sparkling sugar.

I thought they were the same and I'm now the proud owner of a 30# box of sanding sugar that does not sparkle at all. That's why I use it under separator plates.

I went to a wedding where the groom's cake was a toilet (he's a plumber), and it was covered in the sparkling sugar. It really enhanced the flavor of the cake!
