I just typed my whole question and somehow deleted the whole thing icon_mad.gif Let me try this again. I am going to be making a cake for my T-giving dinner next week. I am new to decorating and have only done 2-3 cakes. I was thinking of doing chocolate butter cream with basket weave but I can't think of anything "thanksgiving like" to add to it. I haven't even worked with fondant yet. My family is very critical so I am really stressed. Everytime my mom sees a cake she tells me in a not so subtle way what I could have done better icon_evil.gif Ok I am rambling. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

First, try your best to ignore your mom... I know that's easier said than done, but your cakes and cookies look great, and the only way to improve is to practice. I ended up telling my dad who would give me "advice" on cakes that if couldn't say something nice for everything he criticized, then I didn't want to hear it. It's worked so far.

To answer your question, the cake you did with the yellow and orange roses is great. Maybe you could do the chocolate basket weave with those colored roses all over the top. Or you are also good at cookies, so maybe you can make leaf cookies, and fill the basket with those.

Hope that helps. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Last year, when I was just taking the first Wilton course & didn't know any other techniques, I transferred a coloring book picture of a turkey via piping gel to the top of a cake. I then filled in the turkey with different colored piped buttercream stars. Although it wouldn't look like a basket OF something, I think it would be very cute with a basketweave on the sides. Then you could do anything Thanksgiving-y: turkey, cornucopia, pilgrims, whatever. HTH.

I have a basketweave cake I did for fall in my photos. I did it in a tan color creamcheese BC. I did a simple rope border. An sprinkled fall sprinkle on the top. A simple yet festive cake I think. The cake was a applesause spice. Tastes wonderful with the creamcheese frosting. Or your roses would look great in the basketweave as well thumbs_up.gif Good Luck

Hi! A very simple fall-ish look is to make a cake that would taste good with cinnamon buttercream icing. Yellow cake would work....or carrot cake.... I enhance my mixes with an extra egg, double the oil requested, and a box of instant pudding mix. This makes a heavier, moister cake than the mix alone. To make cinnamon BC, just add cinnamon to a regular white BC recipe. Look at the Thanksgiving cake in my gallery from last year. I moulded the little pumpkins from wilton fondant~ which tastes awful, but is fine for this type of work. You can also roll the fondant out 1/4" thick and use little cookie cutter shapes (wilton makes small ones for fondant/gumpaste) of flowers to add to the look. Use a mossy green colored BC for the leaves, it's more realistic. Good luck! They'll love your cake! The cinnamon BC looks great basketweaved too!
