Ok, where to start? I'm graduating from Grad school in May but have lots of free time at the moment since the Grad program is only taking 2 days a week right now. I was going to dinner with my husband downtown last weekend and we passed a cake shop and he mentioned that I should go talk to the lady that runs it to see if she needs help.

I went to talk to her today and she said that she was interested in hiring and that she normally had people send in a resume. Problem: I've never had any formal training and, therefore, don't have a resume! I had some photos of my cakes with me, and told her I was self-taught and didn't have much of a resume, so she told me to put something together with my information and photos of my cakes for her to look at.

This is where you come in!! Take a look at my cakes - I need help deciding which of my photos to attach to this makeshift resume and if anyone has any ideas of what I can do to make it sound as good as possible even though I don't have any formal training..

HELP!!!

This may sound simple, but I think you should choose a one or two cakes per style. Like one tiered, one carved, one sheet, etc. That way she can see how versitile you are in your abilities. All of your cakes are wonderful! I'd have a hard time chosing if I were you...but that's definately a good thing.

I think all of your cakes are beautiful!!!!
Maybe put: the colette cake, ball caps, pumpkin, bridal shower, scroll work, either the nachos or burger, baby shower. you really want to show that you can do different types of cakes. Your work will speak for itself. You are very talented. Good luck. thumbs_up.gif

I would attach the Colette cake, the bridal shower cake, chocolate tiles, and black and white ribbon. That was you show lots of different styles you can do.

As for the resume, I would just do a simple work resume to show you work history.

I think you should do a quick resume and all of your cakes in a portfolio, they are beautiful. She's crazy if she doesn't take you on.

I agree with smbegg- you need to detail your whole work history, too. As an employer, she's not only going to be looking at your cakes, but also at dependability, integrity, and as you'll be dealing with her customers, your personality and any customer related experiences. Keep in mind, too- she's not only interviewing you, you are also interviewing her, so don't be afraid to ask her questions and find out if you want to work with her, too!

Your cakes are awesome, so you'll have no problems there! Best of luck! thumbs_up.gif

Hi, I had to do that also when I graduated from culinary school

My first page was an intro letter letting them know why I was a good hire candidate..

customer service, years exp. blah blah blah..

I used a word processing program that let me drop pics onto a document.

I had like 4 pics per line and about 4 lines of pic under each one I had the technique that I was highlighting..

Like..choco transfer

2-d or 3-d

marzipan roses/fruit

get the idea??

I had my header and phone number on both sheets in case they lost the first sheet.

If you choose to print out each picture seperately to do like a book report type hand in lol, I would recommend using photo paper, a nice quality paper. Also as recommended before a cover letter introducing yourself and explain that although you are self taught you have a very wide range in which you can work. I'd take one or two of each style cake you've done and print them out and give it to her in a nice report cover type thingie (I forget what they are called icon_sad.gif). But I think everyone has touched on one thing or another here so just go with your gut. icon_smile.gif Also put down your actual job experience, like if you have sales experience register work, phone orders etc. All that will be needed for any type of job so that should be pretty easy icon_wink.gif Just make note of where you worked, phone numbers, contact person, and job description (like "Cashier" or "Secretary") that way it'll show her you know different aspects to being in that type of work, you can take orders, take calls, and make cakes lol icon_wink.gif
