See the white rose on the far left? the petals are much more natural than the pink. On the pink they are a bit too rounded, if you would draw the center of the petal in towards you a bit with your fingertip or an artists paintbrush handle and roll the side edges back a bit it would give the petal more movement. And it looks like the gumpaste tore as you were thinning the outer edges on some of the pink petals. You may have been using too much pressure with the ball tool. If you are using the plastic Wilton ball tool that is what caused it. A good heavy metal ball tool is worth it's weight in gold.

The cake is fabulous. I think you've gotten the rose making process down. They're beautiful.

Hi All!
I finally got around to try the individual petal method. I don't know if anyone is still watching this thread or not but I'll post my pic's here and in my gallery photos.

Anyway, in the background are my original roses from post #1. In the foreground are the three roses and one rosebud I tried tonight using all the great tips from everyone here and well,... I love the individual petal method sooooo much better than the 5 petal that was taught in class.

Tell me what you think of the difference.

Thanks again everyone!!! (ShirleyW your advice as alway is the best... Thx.)

I am NOT having fun with roses today! I've got them very thin, but they want to flop and stick together when I turn them upside down. Help!

Maybe you are trying to add each row too quickly? If your weather is like ours today it is gray and damp out, not good for gumpaste. If you are using the All in one cutter try doing just the bud petals first, let them dry for about half an hour and then do the next row, dry and then do the final row of single petals. And some people are going to wonder what in the world I posted gumpaste miniature books in my first post. I just noticed the link I added takes you to the pirate cake books. Here is the roses link. icon_redface.gif

Yes, it was raining this morning. Your roses are soo beautiful! I don't have an all-in-one, where do you get those?

I think I found something that might work for me today. I made each petal, put a toothpick over the top of a closed Wilton food coloring bottle, and laid the petal on top of that to dry. Seems to give it a decent shape. Having to let each one dry completely before adding to the center, is this normal?

I got the All In One Rose cutter from Nicholas Lodge, it comes in two sizes, these were done with the smaller one.

No, it isn't normal to have to wait for each petal to dry, but in damp or humid weather I can see it happening. I made two gumpaste plaques yesterday, keep flipping them over so they will dry faster and on both sides, still a bit soft today. Drying them over the toothpicks may help. Post photos? I want to see them.

You'll laugh at them, but I'll post when the cake is done Saturday evening. Thanks again for your help! The second looks better than the first.

I wish I could Shirley!!! I REALLY wish I could. icon_biggrin.gif

My house is currently torn apart from a tree that fell on it. Our kitchen table is in our Foyer and the Dining room also has all the stuff from our living room. My kitchen is draped in plastic as drywallers are fixing the ceiling they had to drop and the roofers just finished outside yesterday. Nothing will be done till next Friday. Then it's hurry up and clean all the mess and move back in and somewhere in there put up a tree for Chrismas for 4 very anxious kids who want to know why we don't have a tree up yet!

Yes I repeat I REALLY wish I could!!

Thanks again for all your help.

Oh no, your situation is much worse than mine. I have just put too much on my plate and am suddenly meeting myself coming and going. I am so sorry to hear about the tree, we have that happen in our area quite often. Either Monterey Jack pines or Oak trees. We have clay soil here and some high winds at times in the winter, added to a rainy spring this year and trees have fallen into homes. What a mess you are in, especially with the holidays. I hope your homeowners insurance covered the damage and repairs. Take a deep breath, it will get better soon, promise.

Paula - That cake is beautiful!

Shirley - Here are my roses. I went a little overboard on the luster dust, oops! It's in the school colors for the graduation, dark purple and gold.
