I'm doing my son's birthday cake with a Handy Manny theme. I've never been able to get the shell border to work out - I just can't get the hang of it. Besides stars, can you guys think of another border that might look nice? I saw in the gallery where someone did a nice rope effect on a sheet cake that I thought looked really nice, but I'm afraid it's so similar to the shell border that I will mess it up. Any ideas? Thanks!
big, fat dots are always easy to do and I think really cute. I did that border for my baby shower cake in my photos. Of course, mine isn't super professional looking, but got lots of compliments. I think it looks a little more "manly" than the shell border anyway. good luck!
I agree with the fat dots border that amoos suggested.
I know this sounds really weird, but one time I took a cake to our school lunchroom that had maltballs around it. People crowded all around it asking what I used on the cake! Duh, malt balls, hellooooo. They come in yogurt (white), strawberry (pink) and in a specialty store in a neighboring town, I can get them in green mint, besides the basic brown chocolate ones. Maybe you could use those in a pinch?

You could use the 104 rose tip and make long line with e shapes that are connected ____e____e, or any size star tip could be used to do the same thing. I also sometimes use the large leaf tip (can't think of #) and do a back and forth motion to make boarders. Use any size star tip to make rosettes (make circle that comes in on itself) around the cake. Just some ideas, hope I explained well enough.
Oh guys, those are great ideas! I agree, the shell border isn't quite as "manly" as my husband might prefer for our son's birthday cake. I've tried the big fat dots too, so maybe I could use that, or the maltballs idea if I can get my hands on them. Thanks for your ideas!!
