My sister just had a baby, is trying to break away from her day job and start up a little business. People tell her "it's a good idea", but she wants an un-biased opinion before she gets lofty ideas. She's worked out some logistics already. Here is the business premise. I want your opinion. Do you think this will fly? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

She's state licensed for giving pedicures and manicures. "Hostess" would invite 4-6 friends to their home for a "girls night in". Hostess would serve beverages and light spread (either light appetizers, or just a dessert). Ladies would spend 2 hours socializing and enjoying their time away. My sister would offer pedicures for $25 and manicures for $15. As a perk, hostess would receive a free service (her choice). Ideally, she would like return business and hopes that others (or same person) would book other parties with her. She's purchasing a pedicure stool (for feet placement). She uses disposable liners in her tub and sanitizes her instruments between clients, and launders her towels (all above the state standards). I'd personally love to get away for an evening, catch up with my friends and enjoy a reasonably priced pedicure. What do you think? Thanks!!

I dont know why not, sounds like a good , relaxing night away to me. The cost seems very reasonable, people spend at least that much or more when they purchase from other types of home parties.

I want to come! That sounds great. There is something similar here where they do mini massages, just shoulder rubs. I think it's pretty popular!

Sign me up! If only I lived closer. Someone around here has started the same idea but calls it an at home "spa". She has it set up so you can do mini mani and pedis and does birthday parties etc for the tweens and teens as well. Hope it works out for your sister. I think it would be a great night out with the girls!

Sounds like a winner to me! You have no idea how wonderful it would have been if we could have had a manicurist/pedicurist come in the night before my wedding, while folks were doing decorations and set-up, and give us each a 'service' as we sat there. icon_razz.gif It would have allowed us all to look primped and pretty for the wedding, without having to go anywhere, and would have been wonderful! LOL Tell her to market to bridal parties! I think that having someone actually come take care of the bridal party the night before, or even the morning of, a wedding, would be incredibly welcome! icon_smile.gif

just my two cents' worth!

Will she be coming into the L. A. area. Sounds good and I would not mind hosting either. You might want to offer to do dessert for your sister. When the hostesses don't want to "Be Bothered" For a nominal fee of course LOL

I've been to one of these "Girls Night In". It was fun and relaxing. The services that were offered to the party that I went were massages, manicures and pedicures. One of the best massages I've gotten. I would definitely be up for going to another one and would highly recommend it among my friends. Good Luck!

My moms group did this for one of our monthly 'Moms night out' and it was a big hit. They did massages too. Now that I think of it, we'll have to do that again soon....

Sounds great to me...but would one manicurist be able to do 6 people in 2 hours? My manicurist takes about 45 minutes to do a full manicure...although she may just be slower than other people. She has been in the business for over 15 years, and does a great job...and she does nothing less than perfection. Sounds like a wonderful job opportunity!!!

i would love to have something like this where i live. if she wanted to make a little extra mony she could even have birthday parties for young girls or do this for bachelorette parties, that could be alot of fun and i am sure she would come out with alot of stories! hope she goes for it if she thinks it is her passion or something she will enjoy doing.

Are you kidding me!?! I am all over this! There are so many people that go and have a pedicure for $30+ and they have to drive to the place, sit in public, etc. I think this is a fantastic idea!! And she could have other time fillers, too. Maybe invest in a set of 5 of those foot spas! She could wash and sanitize them thoroughly after each party, but the ladies could be sitting around with their feet in bubbling warm water while they have canapes and a glass of wine or something. You can get really good ones for like $40 a piece! This is a winner of an idea! Tell her to go for it!

I agree that one manicurist isn't enough for a 2 hour time period. If there are 4 people and each want both services (basing on how long my sister takes to perform both) they are 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours per person if done thoroughly and depending on how bad of condition the clients hands/feet are in. We have spa parties like that too and they are a hit in our area.

Actually, my sister and I have thought of something similar. She is a massage therapist/esthetician and I do nails, hair, etc. It's a really good idea but the biggest thing is to market the service to those who value service. You know what I mean? Some people want services as cheap as possible and don't really care about the quality. Then there are other people who see the value of someone coming to them to provide a great service and are willing to pay for it.

There was a show that aired on Rachel Ray on March 13, 2007 with a lady which started that exact business. I could not find the name of her business on the archived Rachel Ray site. But she was pretty sucessful.

Me personally I like going to a spa type enviroment with the massage chairs and a glass a wine. (But I rather get out of the house than stay in).

If I can find the link, I will repost.
