I'm going to be doing a wedding cake for a college student next year. She wants to incorporate butterflies (she's into them) and thistles (he's into his Scottish heritage).
Just wondering if anyone has ever made a thistle flower before
and/or if anyone has a good idea of how to make one that looks real enough.
I can't wait to put this on together - she wants it to look like fairies and elves without having fairies and elves.
Thanks!
Ronny
Ah, good point about the colors and the leaves. I guess I'll have to pop in Braveheart ![]()
Thanks!
Ronnie,
Tried to post a picture for you but it wouldn't post.
Google Scottish Thistle and it will show you the 'pinkish/purpleish' top of the thistle and the leaf points. My daughter does Scottish Highland Dancing so I've seen a million of these! Color is important. Having butterflies around the thistle sounds cute although it's not a butterfly attracting weed (which a thistle is!). Definately the 'hair/grass tip' would work for the top as well as short grass tip piping for the base of the thistle. Maybe just textured fondant for the leaves and stem. Butterflies 3D by the thistle too.
Post the pic when you're done.
Thanks much. I will do that Google search.
She mentioned that she wants the butterflies and thistles kind of "hidden" into the rest of the decorations, so I'm kinda leaning towards a Lord of the Rings meets Braveheart thing...I will post what I come up with. Thanks again.
(BTW, I absolutely love Scottish Highland Dancing.)
Here is a link to Beryl's Cake Decorating. Just type in "Thistle" in the search box and links pop up
There is a mold that looks great ![]()

Hope this helps!

Thank you to both of you! I've been looking at Celtic designs and found a Scottish betrothal emblem (interwined hearts with thistles - how cool is that?) and also thought about Celtic rings - great minds!
And that thistle mold couldn't be more perfect! Muchas gracias!!
