I want to figure out the best way to attach sticks to my cookies. I've checked out other posts and tried gluing the sticks with royal icing but the cookies were too heavy. I have tried putting the sticks into the cookies as soon as they come out of the oven, but the cookies cracked. How do you do it? I really need to figure it out! Help! How thick are your cookies?? Any info would be appreciated! ![]()
My cookies are about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick prior to baking.
I put the stick in the cut out cookie before baking. I push the stick close to the top of the cookie to make sure there will be plenty of support for such a heavy cookie.
Also I use cut down wood skewers for mine.
I put mine in before baking as well. I've tried other methods of attaching, but I think this is the easiest and most durable.
I roll my dough about 3/8 inch thick, and I've never had a problem with the stick coming out (except occasionally when I use bamboo skewers, but I think that's because they're so slick and hard for the dough to "grab". A bit of royal icing in the hole with the stick takes care of that, though!)

Thanks! When you put the sticks in and they bake is there a line or lump on the face of the cookie??
I don't get a lump, because if the dough lumps up, I smooth it back down before baking.
When I put the stick in, I twist it as I push it in, and hold my hand on top of the dough to avoid it making a ridge.
Sometimes I can still see a bit of an indentation or slight hump before decorating, but the icing covers it nicely!

I always put my sticks in when they come out of the oven. I use 1/2 " thick cookies made with all butter and find this works better for me. I just put my hand over the top of the cookie and feel it glide in. When they cool, the butter holds them in place. When I tried before baking, I would break them getting them off the tray.
