I'm still new to airbrushing, and I was hoping some of you can lend your expertise on how to spray on the color smoothly.

Here is a link to my last attempt with the airbrush, and the color is a bit blotchy - - - any ideas on how to prevent this?

(The monster truck cake is the only part that was airbrushed in the photo - - - the mud mound cake was just iced with colored buttercream.)

I first covered the cake with purple fondant (which was actually more of a dull lavendar). Then I sprayed on the violet airbrush color. I gave the cake about 2-3 thin coats of spray.

Should I have sprayed another color first (before the violet)? Do any of you have any great ideas or tutorial links that might help?

Thanks so much!

keep the airbrush moving side to side, the color needs to be applied in strokes, when you stay in one area too long it builds up and shows, like your truck, ( i still think its a very cool cake though even with the airbrushing) also when spraying in strokes and the end of the line stop spraying and start again when you are on the return sweep. again if you continually spray back and forth you will have the build up at the ends. not sure it that makes any sense!!

Just like sweetcakes stated you need to stay in a sweeping motion for full coverage. If you look at my fish, I just sweep back and fourth, then when in close for the lips. Just practice on that will be the best thing. Spread frosting or put a thin layer of fondant on a cake board and just practice using the airbrush.

Your truck is very cute.

sweetcakes & justsweet,

I just wanted to thank you for your help! I tried to do more of a sweeping motion according to your advice on my next airbrush attempt (link below).

I still need practice, but I noticed a difference in coverage.

I think you just need to practice.. Im no seasoned veteran here...But I just wanted to say that I think your cakes are great and the truck and the fish look like they were supposed to be like that... I think they might not look the same if they were better covered.. they look more realistic the way they are now.. Great job..

Misty hun, Welcome to C.C.
And your cakes are like "da bomb" OMG girlfriend you could give Duff a run fer his money! Uh HUH!!
As for the airbrush question, sweetcakes gave you some awesome advice, I would also like to add though that you can do another coat after the first one has dried, it is,afterall, just like spray paint and you need more than one coat to cover completely.

Delightful truck, the paint job is wonderful (I know you were looking for the smooth finish, but it really does look like a paint job.) The fish is fabulous, the spraying is wonderful, and adds real personality to the finish product.
