Any ideas on getting a nice purple color. I'm thinnking ahead to Halloween cookies and I love the combination of orange and purple. I only have easy access to Wilton gel colors unfortunately. I have the violet but will that do a bright, rich purple?

Thanks icon_smile.gif

I've found the best way to get purple is to mix blue and red icing. I color the icing a deep blue and a deep red - letting it sit and darken over several days - then gradually add red to the blue.

here's an additional tip. My purple coloring turns blueish. I've read that avoiding acid in your icing (meringue powder, lemon juice, etc) will prevent this change.

I've also heard that using milk instead of water in your icing will preserve the purple color. I use water and powdered coffee creamer, so I'm not sure what that qualifies as. icon_confused.gif

Geesh! Then I guess I may have trouble keeping it purple if I use RI.

Thanks for the ideas ladies. I may have to play around with this a bit.

Nah... I made these cookies before I learned that purple was impossible. The cookies didn't know it either! I use meringue powder royal icing with the addition of corn syrup and clear vanilla.

If you have time, could you order Americolor Royal Purple from the CC Store? (they are very quick at shipping items that are in stock). If not, use the Wilton Violet to get it as dark as it will go, a tad of royal blue and then let it sit. You should be able to see how dark it will go within a couple of hours. You can also put a smear of it on a paper plate so you can see how it will air dry.
