How much money/time do you plan on giving? That would help determine the size and design. Or maybe you want to donate a small cake with a gift certificate so the winner can get a cake for themselves for a function?

I have been to one many years ago. My suggestion would be something simple and elegant. Maybe a basket weave with some flowers on it. Or maybe you can find out what the people who this is for like and make something to tie into that. Say the family likes a sport or team.

It's my experience that military/firemen/police themed cakes all go VERY well. Since the gentleman is retired police, I would DEFINITELY use that theme. Maybe a police hat and badge, a sheetcake that looks like the uniform shirt, or a smaller cake to look like a cut-out badge. Do NOT be disappointed if you are expecting a HUGE amount for your cake though. Auctions are sometimes very strange places. Some things go SO much higher than you'd ever think and some go WAY lower. I think if you stuck with that theme, people would know how much it means to the family and go higher. Just MHO.
