God help dh, I'm going to kill him. Last Sunday while dh was watching him, our 2 yr old jumped off the neighbor's trampoline and we thought his left foot was broken. He still isn't walking right a week later. So today I went to the gym, and the 2 yr old swallowed a coin!!!! MEN! He said that David cried for like 20 minutes, but when I got home he was stuffing his face with a turkey sandwich and drinking water. Web MD said that usually swallowed objects pass within 7 days and to watch for them, but I'm wondering if maybe I should take him to the ER tonight anyway. Anybody have an opinion or experience with this? Or should I just waid and call his ped in the morning?
Any advice is appreciated.
Michelle
My daughter stuck a nut (think nuts and bolts) up her nose last spring. I took her to urgent care to get it removed. They couldn't get it out, and instead pushed it back further and it fell into her throat and she ended up swallowing it. They said no big deal, it will pass. Watch her and make sure she doesn't have and belly pains which would be a sign of it getting caught up in her intestines.
She cried for quite awhile also because she was scared of what was going on and what might happen to her nose.
On another note, I've heard pennies can be dangerous for a child to swallow. If that was the coin that was swallowed, I'd take him in as soon as I could.
That depends--what kind of coin was it?? I am a Vet Tech and while I know your son is not a puppy, we only get worried if it was a penny they swollow. You have to worry about the copper in the penny causing problems not the passing of it.
DO you have one of those "NurseCall" 24 things? You could call them and ask-- or what about poison control? I would also consider this enough of an emergency to call your own pediatrician about-- someone will be on call to call you back and at least discuss it with you.
Dh isn't sure what kind of coin it was, our 4 yr. old told him it was money so that's the only reason we even know what he swallowed. I think that it was a good sign that he ate a sandwich and drank a pint glass of water afterward.
Should I go to the hospital? I'm leaning toward no, but it's scary.
Please call someone in the human medical field. Your ER room should be able to answer if you should come in, or a urgent care facility. Like I said eariler it is not the passing of it that would be a consern, and eating and drinking today does not suprise me. Toxicity takes time with this.
Also take a HUGE pillow and bop your DH with it--it would just make me feel better ![]()

My son swallowed a quarter, and we took him in. They xrayed it to make sure it wasn't lodged somewhere and told us to watch for it. If we didn't see it in a certain number of days, to bring him back in to be reXrayed so they could compare the two. Honestly, I'd take him in just to be safe, especially since you aren't sure what type of coin it was. Have them Xray his foot too. My older son broke his in the fall, and could walk on it, but he walked funny and was painful.
I would take him just to be on the safe side since you don't know what type of coin it was. Also tell them to check his foot while you are at it. My daughter hurt her leg getting on the school bus you know wasnt paying attention and hit her shin on the step well bus driver said to put some ice on it and we did. She did not complain too much about it but a few days later her foot was black and blue took her to the doctors to find out she had a hair line fracture. it already started to heal so they would not do anything about it. Please keep us posted as what the outcome is.
my son last month swallowed a round ball magnet that goes to a game.
I was so mad because he's 5 and knows better. Took him to the doctor and they had me wait 2 days and then get a blood test (toxic screen) done to see if it had lead in it. (Thanks goodness it didn't.)
I'd take him in because penny's after a certain year are toxic. Better safe than sorry!
My 3 yr old DD just swallowed a penny probably a month ago. I talked to her dr about it and said that it should pass with no problem just to keep an eye out for it. At that time I didn't know what kind of coin she swallowed. He did tell me that the newer pennies are the harmful ones because of the zinc in them. The older ones don't have zinc in them. It can cause stomach ulcers. She passed it within 3 days and yes it was a penny. She was fine and had no stomach problems due to it being a penny. HTH.
Ah heck, I'd just deduct it from his allowance...
(
Just kidding...I'd call the advice nurse and ask...and I'd take him in for the foot, too)
Here's the scoop. Our ped does have a 24 hour emergency line and I called. They said just look for it to pass in his stool, and watch for abdominal pain or vomiting. They also said that since a coin has smooth edges they usually pass really easily within a week, and since he ate a turkey sandwich and an adult size portion of past afterward, he seems to be okay and not to worry. He's asking for a turkey sandwich for breakfast right now.
Regarding his foot, I did take him in to be xrayed after it happened. The xray was negative, but it still seems to be bothering him so I think I may take him back b/c I know cartilege can be fractured and not show up on xray.
Thanks os much for the advice! Now, go to the 4 yr. old thread I started and tell me what to do about my daughter! ![]()
Okay, it has been 3 days and still no coin in the diaper. I'm starting to think that maybe he didn't swallow it.
While you don't want to over-radiate any child, it would be best to be re-x-rayed in 3-4 wks. after an injury. That is usually the time it takes for a hairline fracture to show up. I'd still wrap it in an ace bandage and keep him off of it as much as possible either way.
