How about a cake with a flag on it and a wwII rifle made of fondant lying across it. Or you could do a fcbt of it.

Something to this effect with maybe a medal on it if you know of or can get one of his medals. That would be really nice to have a relica of it on the flag as well.

This is one guy right? Do you know where he was or what he was doing? Something that incorporates that would probably be very special to him.

My husband's grandpa had a globe with a trail marked of where he went during the war, he showed it to people whenever he could.

You can find pictures of different patches like armor and stuff and one that he wore would mean alot.

I agree completely with mbelgard. Something that means more to him will really be special. Something to do with his specific branch of service is more special.

Also, at the risk of sounding negative, some vets of that era are completely against flag cakes-you have to cut it, digest it, etc. I did a lot of asking before I made mine and decided that it would go only on a dummy so it wouldn't offend anyone to cut into it.

I have done several Marine Corps cakes lately-feel free to look and ask questions if you have any. There are so many great cakes under "military" in the gallery, I'm sure you could find several suitable. Good luck! It's an honor to make a cake for a veteran IMO.

I agree something that pertains what branch of service he was in. I just got back from Europe & seeing a bunch of sites from wwII. I spent time with a few veterians from wwII. They had plenty of stories about where they were stationed in diffrent parts at they time. Just a suggestion.

Very true. I'm an Army brat and you learn early the respect due the flag, the military is big on it. I still get offended when I see flags that are worn out and frayed hanging or people leaving flags out that aren't properly lit. The WWII era vets could have much stricter views than I do about the flag.
