Hey guys I just got back from Germany & Austria. We went to several down town stores saw alot of bakeries I looked all over only saw 2 cakes. Do they not make them like they do here? Just food for thought

They have them there. I believe they're called "konditorein". Most European cakes are leavened with egg whites instead of powders (like American cakes), sweetened with a simple syrup or a jam, and have a light application of fat based icing (usually French mousseline/buttercream etc.) It all depends in which European country you go to that determines the variety. All of them are very good as I have tried and made most of them; my instructor/mentor is Belgian and has been baking since he was 11 years old. He is now 43.

Were you looking for "decorated" cakes? I think that most of european bakeries cater to the take home crowd or the grab a quick bite with my espresso crowd. So they have a lot of small desserts, petit fours, cookies and tarts, but not "publix" style cakes and pies. Did you try anything? Both of those countries are known for their rich desserts...I'm sure everything was delicious. Not as sweet as everyone is used to here, but definetly mouth watering.

Yes I was looking for decorating cakes. I did try severaler pasteries very good very diffrent from home though
