Hey everyone! I am attempting to make my first cake for my little boy's birthday. Is the wilton mix any good? Or am I better off making my own? I want to do a 10 in round cake with fondant polk-a-dots. Any suggestions?

Thank you
Maegan

I haven't used the Wilton mix. I prefer to make my own, it gives me more satisfaction. icon_biggrin.gif

I wouldn't use it, especially since there are so many recipies to choose from. It may save you time buy forget about the taste. I personally like the white chocolate buttercreame and so does my family. It's not all that hard to make.

That is what I was worried about was the taste. So do you happen to have that recipe? And will it work well to put the fondant accents on? The easier the better since I am completely new to all this!

Before I knew better I used the mix. Then I realized it's pretty much just the vanilla and powdered sugar, icon_confused.gif you still have to add the milk and butter. It's cheaper just to make it from scratch. icon_biggrin.gif

It's posted in the icing section of the recipies, however I'm so bad at measuring I read once and then just throw in the ingredients. It goes, butter, shortening, milk, vanilla, powdered sugar, merinque powder, white chcolate and flour. Taste AWESOME! Several varieties try them all. and yes fondant will stick to it just fine. Let it dry slightly so it won't slip off. Good Luck

The Wilton white b/c mix tastes fine, but it sure doesn't make enough to cover a 10" layer cake.

Here's the Wilton b/c recipe:

The Whipped Cream b/c icing is pretty tasty:

Also here's a great doctored cake mix recipe, has the reliability of a mix with a more homemade taste.
