I am making a 12" cake. It will be covered first with BC then fondant. Here is my problem. When I put the top layer on after doing the filling, the top cake split about a third of the way across.
When I do the BC, I do two layers, so will this smooth-out this crack so it doesn't show through when I apply the fondant? Should I be doing anything else before I put the BC on.?
This is only my second cake I have made for somebody else. I sure don't want to mess it up more.
Thanks for any and all help.

Yes, that should do it. Kinda use your buttercream as glue on that first layer and it should be great , no one will no the difference. icon_smile.gif Goodluck.

I have a question for you...do you level your cakes first? If there is a hump in the cake, that may cause it to crack when you put one on top of the other. Just a thought!

I went ahead and put on the firs coat of bc. It appears to be working.
Thank you very much.

Yes,the cake was level. I had picked it up, had brushed off a few crumbs, then was moving it to put onto the stack, I think it just started to slide, I caught it though.
Thank you.
