I've seen lots of different opinions on this. I personally like to stack and crumb coat while still frozen, less chance for breakage.
Then I 'll let it sit for a little while 20 minutes to longer, depending on what kiddo wrangling I have to do
, then frost!

Yeah, there are so many different ways of doing this...you kind of have to just find out what works for you.
If it's a smaller cake I usually thaw first before filling or icing
If I'm stacking large layers then I'll fill the cake while frozen, cover with saran wrap and let it thaw before icing. Otherwise the condensation can be a pain. If I'm doing a carved cake I usually stack and carve it frozen, then cover and thaw before icing/fondant.
