My friend asked me to bake a cake for a lady expecting her 4th baby, for whome she was trowing a baby shower. We both liked the shower cakes with little yellow ducks, so this is what I decided to do. A week out, I started looking for little plastic ducks, since I am not very good at freehand molding of anything, let alone fondant. We live in the rural part of Germany and it was very likely that I would be searching for days. However, my luck was great (and so I thought) and I found 3 little ducks in the first store I looked. Now, they all had some sort of hats on their hads so I decided to continue looking for a traditional rubber ducks. I found a little mom-baby duck combo in another store (just one package). GOOD - lucky me! My 7 yo DD said - "Mom, now you are just missing the dad - you have the siblings, mom and the baby". So I frantically started looking for the dad duck. What a wonderful idea - I will put the whole family on the cake. Couple of hours later, I had the dad duck. Well, he had a mask and a snorkel on his beak, but who cares. The family was whole and my mission accomplished.

Well, that is not the end of the story. Friday afternoon - I am looking through my cake nick-nacks, just to realize that I do not have my big cake plate - the lady I baked the cake for did not return it!!! Well, I have to go with smaller rounds then...OK, I decide I will try 9 and 6 inch stacked, but the ducks don't fit around the bottom tier. So, I remember that I had some pillars, and decide to put the top tier on pillars. In the process, I "realize" that those are not push in pillars, so that idea was shattered. I quickly went on my computer and asked dear CC members for help determining whether I could use the pillars as push in pillars, just to find out that the pillars I had WERE push in pillars. Embarassing, but hey, I will get the cake done good. I baked 9 and 7 inch cakes, made buttercream, crumb coated them last night and went to sleep all happy. Well, this morning I colored the buttercream blue for the water and started decorating. Everything was going great. I pushed the pillars in and put the top tier on, and it looked great. But....the damn ducks were too big to fit under the plate........I wanted to cry...What do I do? I ran to the store in which I saw the mom/baby duck combo and found two additional items. Well, now I am missing another sibling!!! O well...the cake now does not have a family on, just three little ducks and a mama duck. It does not look bad, but it is not what I wanted. I am so disappointed! Sorry for such long rant!

Thank you. I know the final product is not bad, but all the issues with ducks just made it kind of "sour".

Who would have thought there were so many varieties of ducks out there! Your cake turned out sooo adorable, despite the issues! thumbs_up.gif

I think your cake is too cute!!! I love the bubbles and the ducks look great! thumbs_up.gif But I do understand how frustrating it is when you have the vision in your head, but nothing will cooperate with you!

Thank you, everybody, on your kind words. I know my "disaster" does not compare with many "real" cake disasters I read about, but my frustration was just soo HUGE when I wrote about this topic.
