I think Mezzaluna had the right idea. I think it could have been said a little softer, but she was right. If you don't act like a professional, customers won't treat you with respesct. That's what happens when we try to be nice, people like to take advantage. As to the deposit, if the contract did not state that the deposit was non-refundable, I would return the deposit. You don't want to burn bridges. She may know someone who know someone and speak ill of you. Especially, where I'm from, I run into that all the time. icon_sad.gif

I agree with the other posters in that you should not under ANY circumstances give the check to ____ who will give it to ____ who will give it to the bride... Certified letter directly to the bride only using your personal check because that way if there is any question, you can stop payment on it!!

Sounds like she's looking to make trouble for you at this point... Don't let yourself get sucked in.

Actually the person in the first _______ is a close friend of mine. She is the mother of the customer's friend that refered me (if that makes sense). Plus, the customer gave me cash. So she has nothing to say what she gave me if anything at all. From the beginning I've had every intention of giving her the deposit back. It's $160.00 and I haven't worked for it nor did we have a contract stating that she would not get it back. I bake for family and friends and sometimes friends of friends. This was that time (she was a friend of a daughter of a friend). I basically charge for the cost of the ingredients and maybe a little bit more. At least until I can get my own little business and become legal. Plus it makes me feel good to help out someone that may not otherwise be able to afford a beautiful wedding cake. However, I do not want to be mistreated either or taken advantage of. That is where my generosity stops. And that is what happened with this Bride.
