The "Basic White Cake" recipe (in the CC recipe section) calls for 1 1/2 cups of milk. is there anything (other than soy) that i can substitute for the milk in the recipe and still have it come out ok?

i'm baking for a class that has milk allergic kids in it. they're ok with the butter flavored crisco (already tried that last week on the oatmeal cookies), but i need something for the milk that's in cake mixes.

2nd question... if i don't have cake flour, can i just use all ap flour and sift it really well?

thanks,

Why can you not use soy?
There is a Rice milk in a carton by the evaporated milks in my store.
Can they eat goats milk? (don't wrinkle your nose. icon_confused.gif It really is creamy)
Are you close to a health food store? There are all kinds of milk substitutes these days.

i don't want to use soy 'cause it tastes yucky icon_razz.gif just my opinion icon_smile.gif rice milk sounds just as bad, but i've never tried it. so i might give it a try if i can get over the instant nausea the name causes.

since milk is basically water with a fat in it, is it possible to just add water and up the amount of butter crisco to equal the volume of milk required?

i have used soy milk in place of milk for a cake and it came out fine and tasty. i don't like soy milk either, but in cake, it's great.

same here. I don't like the taste of soy milk, but on the many occassions where I have baked with it, I could not taste the soy milk. Only when it's plain do I taste soy milk.

Have you tried "Rice Dream", it's a good substitute for milk, and I think, taste really good.

How about a non-dairy creamer? It'll give you that richness in flavor you're looking for, without the milk.

I'm allergic to milk and I put Non-dairy creamer in my coffee. I love it. icon_smile.gif

Land O Lakes makes a good one.
