Please Help Me Avoid Cake Catastrophe

I found this train cake here in a gallery, but I need more cake servings, so I am going to put in on top of a 9x13 sheet cake. Do you think everything will be ok as long as I put skewers/straws underneath? The train and the car are made from a 9x13 cake with a little left over. I was just afraid it might be too heavy.

I think so....I might cut some cake circles to fit under the train pieces [you might already be thinking of that with the skewers/straws].

Or, can you make more train cars?

I made a 3-d train for my son many years ago and used a ½ sheet cut into 3rds for the additional cars and turned it into a circus train

She is having 24 people at the party, and I am guessing the train will only serve 7 or 8, then the car maybe an additional 4 or 5. Another car will still not put me at 24 servings, and she said she wanted extra cake to take home.

Do you think the sheet cake idea will look bad?

i like the idea of more cars..i think it would be very cute and you would not have to worry about the wight.

Just add a few more cars then...that'd work. I think the sheet cake underneath would look okay...it's just a lot more work to make the support system for the train and car to sit on the sheetcake. You'd have to cut the cake cardboards to fit and then use your dowels/straws too.

I think it'd be more work and room for oops!! I would fear that the cake may slide off or something. But, it wouldn't look bad, if you're brave enough to try it!

I wasn't going to put cake circles under the cars, because I thought it would make them too heavy for the cake. I was just going to put a skewer or straw through the train into the sheet cake. Is this wrong?

Yes. I would treat it like a tiered cake. Train with a board cut to match underneath on top of the sheet and dowels under it. You can put one all the way through through as well but if its a heavy bugger then that alone will not keep it together.

I made a train cake with the same pan and added two cars; it provided 25 big servings.

I think my train is a little smaller than yours because I didn't use a train pan, I built it out of cake. Do you remember the dimensions of your cars?

Lori,

They were bread loaf pans, and I hollowed out a bit on top to put in the candy.

They look really small for bread loaf pans. Is it one loaf pan cut in half? My loaf pan here seems much longer.
