I want to try making a closed book cake. I've seen many here on CC n they're lovely. Can someone pls give me instructions on how to get the binding right?

TIA

I just used a shish ka bob (sp) skewer. I laid it where I wanted it and pushed in. I don't know if it was right but it looked the way I wanted it to.

I have done several closed books (see website birthdays). What I do is bake an oblong cake and competely cover as you wood a normal cake. Along the front, top and bottom edge I use a ruller to imprint to look like page leaves which I paint gold afterwards.
The ones I have done are leather bound look and I roll out a piece of chocolate fondant on a cutting board to give it the leather look, a little larger than the cake and place the cake onto it. I then roll out a piece big enough to cover the top and the spine of the book and tuck this under to make it neat on the spine edge. I have the fondant overlaping a little at the front and let the corners curl downwards to look like a well used book. Make markings where you want on the spine. I use the cutter strip that came with the pink tappits, making it deep enough so I can paint gold in the crevass. pm me if you want any help. Cheers Briarview
