I just made a body cake (this is the second one I have made) and both times the big piece of fondant I cover with the overall cake - the fondant has small holes in it!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I don't know why it is doing it. My smaller pieces come out fine but the big ones aren't. I am real new to fondant and don't know what to do different. The cake I just made was a hooters cake with a tank top and shorts (I will post today).

My first thought was I wasn't "working" it long enough but...I worked it long than the smaller pieces or so it seemed. I am using Satin Ice Fondant. I should have taken a close up of what I was talking about. Anyone have any thoughts?

Also I am getting some cracking. I tried not to add too much corn starch. I had my kitchen fan going like crazy so I thought it might be what was drying it out faster than I thought it should.

If there is cracking it may be that your fondant is too dry. I use shortening when I work my fondant rather than cornstarch as I find cornstarch has a drying effect. Also, how thick did you roll out the fondant. If it is too thin it can tear too.

Sounds like the cracking is a drying issue.... the fan as well as the cornstarch could be at fault there. As far as the small holes ...it sounds like you might have areas that are too thin.

Cracking - I think the cracking is the dryness too. I added some crisco to it but I didn't want to keep adding it. And I tried to limit the corn starch but it would start to stick to my rolling pin. Does added crisco make the fondant shiney and do you only add it to the back side or both? When I roll it out and add some crisco then I flip it over onto my cake so the bottom becomes my top - should I flip it over when rolling?

HOLES!! I don't know. I rolled it out about 1/8 inch thick. I didn't think it was a thinness problem because the pieces I put on top were thinner and didn't do that (but they were smaller pieces). It is weird and frustrating!

Thanks for listening...
