i'm making a cake using 3 layers instead of 2, do i need to put support in for the extra layer, or will it be o.k.?

I've done several 3 layer (2" per layer) cakes without supports and they've been okay. I wouldn't go any higher though.

I agree with Magda. No additional support needed for 3 layers. Four layers should be doweled.

typically my rule of thumb is a cake board for every 4" of cake, however if you are only adding another 2" layer on then you should be ok-this would be if you only had 6" of cake (the hexagon cake with all the roses in my photos did not have a support and was all 2" layers)

But if you are talking about 3" layers then I would definitely add another support in there b/c that cake will be getting heavy.

All my family has ever done is 3 layer cakes. If you asked them what kind of support they use they would probably say "why would a cake need support?" and look at you funny.

Are you guys talking about 1 cake that has multiple layers? If so, I've done a 4 layer, and never doweled it. It is fine.
