I am going to make chocolate ganache for the 1st time for a cake that I will be serving for Rosh Hashana dinner at my house tomorrow night. My question is what flavor cake to use it with...chocolate, yellow, or white cake. What is the bset flavor with ganache? I am a chocolate lover, but is it going to be too rich on a chocolate cake? Please help...I want to bake the cake first thing tomorrow morning. Thank you so much!!

Are you saying that you are going to cover a cake with ganache? If this is the case, may I suggest a white chocolate cake to be covered in miilk or dark chocolate? I find this cake to be moist and decadent yet the two together isn't over powering. I use white cake box mix with the extender recipe and fold in at the end half a bag of white chocolate chips that I've run through the KitchenAid chopper until well chopped. Bake as usual.

Oh!- white chocolate cake with ganache sounds really nice! I've only made it with chocolate, chocolate/cherry, and chocolate/peppermint cakes. They were really good. My mother claims the cherry one was, "the best cake" she had ever had. They were rich- but rich in a really good way.

The white chocolate does sound great! I am looking to do something very easy and basic since I have to also cook everything for this dinner. I just want something that will taste great and I thought I could just pour the ganache over the cake and it would be simple but pretty since it would hopefully be shiny. Thanks for the replies!!!

An extender is what you would add to a box mix that increases the volume of batter but most importantly makes it taste like scratch. Here's what it is......
Make the box mix as directed but add
1 cup flour
1 cup sugar
8 oz sour cream
1 egg
Pinch salt
Appriopriate flavor/extract.

I assemble these ingredients, then sift the cake mix & flour in a bowl. In a separate bowl whisk sour cream with eggs one at a time (in this case 3 egg whites plus 1 whole). I then add the oil, water, sugar and flavor.
To the wet I add the dry in 3 separate batches. For the white chocolate cake recipe, I add a cap full of vanilla extract and fold in the chopped chips right at the end. Tap pans to get the air bubbles out and bake as usual. Makes 2 generous 8" cakes.
