Please Help! I was asked by my boss to do a smash cake for her grandson. When I asked for ideas she said do whatever, just make it cute. This is for a boy who just turned one. He loves balls. Any ideas?

How about making the cake in the shape of a ball using the sports ball pan? You could decorate it like a bouncy ball instead of a sports ball and you could put the #1 in the middle.

Or you could do a small 4" or 5" cake with fondant balls in different sizes as decorations. You could also do fondant balls for the border. Maybe in bright colors? Or different shades of blue?

Maybe you could use a mini-ball pan instead of the big one, and like the above post mentioned, decorate like a little beach ball with a 1 on it.

I like the two ideas before me...maybe add "have a ball of a birthday" or "ball of a good time" something like that.

Thanks, those are good ideas. I do not have a sports ball pan though, any ideas on how to make a ball without a ball pan. I guess just stack cake until the desired hight and then trim until it looks like a ball.

Do you have any pyrex mixing bowls? Pampered chef bowls??? you can carve them a little easier if you have something roundish already.

How about combining all of the above. A 4 or 5" round with different color balls bottom border, top border white; different color and size fondant/gumpaste balls on wires (either rolled and cut out with cutters or rolled like cake balls but a little bigger). The number 1 on a wire and the cake can say Happy Birthdy (child's name) Have a Ball in the colors you use for the balls; especially if you have the fondant alphabet cutters.
