Not Using A Heating Core W/ 10 In?

Does anyone skip using the heating core on a 10 inch round and have success?
I'm working on a wedding cake and am having to use the heating core for the first time with the 12in and 14 in. However, I'm not impressed with the way it works and would like to skip it with the 10 in if I can. I think I've made a 10 in. round without using the heating core before but I can't remember. I've used the flower nail before and it worked - I just hate that stupid heating core and I don't really know why. I guess I'm stuck in my ways. ![]()
I don't want to throw away ANOTHER cake....
I have....and I have actually made a 14in. w/out a heating core (as I had no clue what they even were back then). My cakes turned out just fine & weren't overly browned either. Good luck. I too hate heating cores and luckily I don't plan on making anything larger than a 10in. ever anyhow ![]()
Please keep in mind that I'm a really Newbie...chuckle... But, I have been doing some serious reading, and it seems that most people are using their flower nails instead of the cores. They put the head part on the bottom of the pan, and the nail sticking up through the batter. Apparently, that is enough of a heat transfer for it to cook the center of the cake...
Hope this helps! ![]()

I baked all my 10" cake using baking strips at 325 (w/ my over thermometer reading) and it works great... no dome at all.
Thanks everyone. I baked it using the flower nail and it came out fine. Now I'm considering re-baking the 10 in. I'd already done with the heating core. LOL I hate that thing! Thanks again!
