I'm making my first wedding cake for a friend who's getting married at the end of January. She wants a 3-tiered cake, off white icing (buttercream) and burgundy poinsettas. She doesn't want any border piped around the edges, just a smooth looking icing. I'm both excited AND nervous about doing this. Because she's my friend I'll also be a guest at the wedding, which is about an hour away. This could be a good way to get my name out there and it will be nice to see and hear what people think of my work.

Any ideas, tips, encouragement is appreciated! Thanks icon_smile.gif

Sounds beautiful! I love Burgundy. I can't wait to see it!
I did my own wedding cake in the off white. I just made my buttercream (I use the all Crisco recipe, only with 1/2 of the Crisco) with canned evaporated milk. It was just the perfect color, and was delicious too.
The pic is in my photos. Good luck. I'm sure you will get lots of advice, and ideas before Jan.

Some of the smoothest icing with the cleanest edges has been from Antonia74.

She is awesome with the IMBC (Italian Meringue Buttercream)! I have never tried it but hope to be as good as she is someday!

You'll do fine- just have fun with it. icon_smile.gif

It is definitely normal to be nervous. I get so nervous with every wedding cake I do. I think that is part of it. I am sure you will do just fine and the cake will be lovely. Your kindness and generosity will truly be appreciated as well as your talent.

What I do is set the cake up in my kitchen for a trial run. That way I'm sure of everything I need and won't find out I forgot something.

I wish you the best. I have my first one this weekend and I am sooooooooooooo nervous! I'm trying to calm myself by thinking what someone on here said, it's just a regular cake just called something different.
Let us know how it goes!

From watching the Food Network I learned even the best Bakers have things go wrong. You can only do your best, but you will find after it's over you will say to yourself "that was easy" Wait until you see everyone admiring your cake, what a feeling. When I was in the food line no one knew I had made the cake and I could hear the comments about how beautiful the cake was.

One the way there I kept telling my husband "slow down you are going too fast". His reply " the Ace of Cakes drives 90 miles an hour and his cake gets there fine. I should have printed signs for the window "transporting cake" so drivers would understand why we are driving so carefuly.

I totally understand your nerves! The only tips I can give you are what I have learned: I cut a template of the back of my SUV out of a new mattress pad (egg shell type?) and lay the separated cake layers on that to transport. It made it much easier, absorbed the bumps, and kept everything in its place. Then I just put the sections together at the location. On my first cake, I actually did a "trial" smaller version of the same cake so I was confident on the design and the construction part. That took most of my nerves away! I was quite calm on the day of the actual wedding, and I think it paid off, because I had no disasters! Good luck, RELAX and enjoy the compliments..... thumbs_up.gif

You'll be fine icon_smile.gif I just did my first Wedding Cake and it was for a friend/co-worker. I, too, was a guest at the wedding and trust me... You will be on cloud nine when you hear all the compliments about your cake. I got tired of saying Thank you LOL I'm sure your experience will be as positive as mine was.

BTW, take some business cards if you have them. The Photographer and the Wedding Coordinator and some guests were asking me for cards but I didn't have any icon_sad.gif
